About the role

The Deputy Chief Plant Protection Officer (Deputy CPPO) works closely with the Chief Plant Protection Officer (CPPO) to deliver strategic, scientific and regulatory leadership across plant biosecurity programs, oversee operational teams and strengthen Tasmania’s capacity to anticipate, detect and manage plant risks, safeguarding Tasmania’s plant biosecurity system.

In this role you will:

• Provide high level scientific, technical and policy advice to ensure plant health programs and legislative frameworks meet the strategic objectives of the Government.
• Lead, supervise, mentor and guide staff across plant biosecurity disciplines.
• Provide authoritative advice to the CPPO, senior executives, the Minister and other government agencies and industry on plant health, biosecurity risks and emergency management.
• Monitor emerging trends, maintain professional networks, and contribute to continuous improvement across the plant biosecurity function.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).

Pre-employment requirements

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer. The following check is to be conducted:

1. Conviction check in the following conviction areas:

1. Crimes of violence
2. Sex related offences
3. Serious drug offences
4. Crimes involving dishonesty
5. Serious traffic offences
6. Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation

Essential requirements

• A degree in biological or agricultural sciences relevant to the professional duties to be undertaken, as provided by a university.

Desirable requirements

• A PhD in plant science, or another relevant discipline.
• A current motor vehicle driver’s licence.
