Job description:

To provide civil legal advice and litigation services to the State and its Agencies by acting as a litigious solicitor and counsel. This position has a particular focus on general civil litigation matters involving the State and its Agencies including, but not limited to: administrative matters, workers compensation, abuse in care matters, medical negligence, and general commercial litigation and (under direction) the development of practices, procedures and policies of the State Litigation Office.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available. 

Duties

  • To act as solicitor and counsel in civil matters involving the State and its Agencies before any State Courts, Tribunals or Boards at first instance.
  • To act as solicitor and counsel in civil appellate matters under the supervision of more senior legal practitioners.
  • To provide advice to the State and its Agencies in respect of civil legal issues.
  • To act as counsel in such matters involving the State and its Agencies as may be directed from time to time by the State Litigator.
  • To assist as directed by the State Litigator and / or the Executive Officer of the State Litigation Office with the development and documentation of legal policies, practices and procedures of the Office.
  • To participate in performance management and file reviews as directed by the State Litigator.

Essential Requirements

  • Admitted or eligible for admission as a Barrister or Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
  • A Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (employment).

Desirable Requirements

  • At least 2 years' experience in legal practice relevant to the duties of the position.
  • Current driver licence

Pre-employment Checks

The Head of State Service has determined that the person nominated for this vacancy is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Pre-employment (National Police Record) checks for: Arson and fire setting, violent crimes and crimes against the person, sex-related offences, drug and alcohol related offences, crimes involving dishonesty, deception and/or conspiracy, making false declarations, malicious damage and destruction to property, serious traffic offences, crimes against public order or relating to the Administration of Law and Justice, Executive or the Legislative Power.
  2. Disciplinary action in previous employment.
  3. Identification check.
