Job description:

Provide leadership and professional and technical advice on threatened species conservation and management in Tasmania.

About the role

As a Senior Ecologist you will provide high level leadership alongside professional and technical expertise in threatened species conservation and management. You will lead and manage projects, as well as coordinate programs that enhance the knowledge and understanding of threatened species across Tasmania.

This role plays a key part in informing conservation outcomes, supporting evidence-based decision making, and ensuring alignment with environmental legislation and policy frameworks.

People with strong expertise in birds are encouraged to apply, as this capability would complement existing team strengths and support current conservation priorities.

This is a fixed-term, full time position for 12 months (or until the return of the substantive occupant), based in either Hobart or Launceston.

Our ideal candidate has

  • Significant experience in a relevant field such as biological science, terrestrial ecology, zoology or wildlife management.
  • Extensive practical knowledge of issues relating to conservation and management of threatened species in Tasmania.
  • Demonstrated expertise in bird ecology, monitoring, or conservation, and the ability to apply this knowledge to threatened species outcomes.
  • Insight into the social and political environment in which the Department of Natural Resources and Environment operates.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead complex programs or initiatives.

We offer

  • A meaningful opportunity to contribute to the protection of Tasmania’s unique and threatened species.
  • Flexible work options within a supportive, inclusive and values-driven workplace.
  • The chance to collaborate with a passionate team of dedicated environmental professionals.
  • Access to a syndicate of gyms and fitness centres across Tasmania at a reduced rate.
