Job description:

The Assistant Commissioner is a senior leadership role responsible for providing contemporary and strategic direction for a major business function within the Tasmania Prison Service.

Details of Appointment

Permanent Full-time

This is a day work position working 73.5 hours per fortnight.

The position can be located at either Risdon or Launceston

Should the Commissioner of Prisons determine that the duties meet the requirements of the Correctional Facility Allowance, then the salary that includes that allowance would range from $156,346 pa to $166,862 pa

Working Environment

Tasmania Prison Service (TPS) has prison facilities located at Risdon Vale, Hobart and Launceston in Tasmania. This position can be based at either Risdon or Launceston. The Risdon Vale site offers a corporate working environment without the hustle and bustle of city centre offices, free on-site parking and access to the on-site staff gym (or head across the road to Risdon Brook Dam for a walk at lunch time). 

Duties

  • Lead and direct the development, implementation, and review of strategic and business plans for the assigned function based on improving practice in line with contemporary correctional services.
  • Provide high-level strategic advice to the Commissioner and Executive on complex policy and operational issues related to the business function.
  • Drive innovative approaches and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure the function remains at the forefront of contemporary correctional practice.
  • Ensure strong collaboration and engagement with internal and external stakeholders to break down organisational silos and achieve integrated service delivery.
  • Advance a rehabilitative culture of safety, respect, and innovation consistent with the Department’s values.
  • Manage the functions budget and resources effectively to ensure value for money and the achievement of departments objectives.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of governance structures, program/service delivery frameworks, and performance methodologies.

  • Completion of Correctional Administration or Management qualifications at a Diploma or higher educational level.
  • Demonstrated high level experience in leadership and management roles.
