About the role

Support the Principal Legal Officer and Senior Legal Officer by undertaking research, providing legal advice and representing the Department of Police Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM) in litigious matters.

You will

• Provide legal advice to members of DPFEM on a wide range of routine matters within the policing context.
• Assist the Principal Legal Officer and the Senior Legal Officer with litigious matters and research in relation to routine matters and more complex matters.
• Conduct matters and represent the Commissioner of Police before various Courts and Tribunals, in particular appeals under the Firearms Act 1996 and applications under the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 (Cth).

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight.

Pre-employment requirements 

The Head of the State Service has determined that a person nominated for appointment to this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.

Any relevant serious criminal offence or repeated serious offences over any period, which are not mitigated by additional information, may provide grounds for declining an application for appointment.

Such offences would include, but are not limited to:

• arson and fire setting
• sexual offences
• dishonesty (e.g. theft, burglary, breaking and entering, fraud)
• deception (e.g. obtaining an advantage by deception)
• making false declarations
• violent crimes and crimes against the person
• malicious damage and destruction to property
• trafficking of narcotic substance
• false alarm raising.

Essential requirements

• Legal practitioner with a minimum of 2 years relevant post-admission experience.
• Admitted, or qualified for and entitled to be admitted, as a barrister or a practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania under the Provisions of the Legal Profession Act 2007.
