The Team
Libraries Tasmania is a uniquely Tasmanian organisation, offering contemporary library and archive services to the Tasmanian community. We are incredibly proud of Tasmania's extensive library network and the fact that Tasmanians value the services that enrich their lives. We provide services for recreation, learning, discovering our past, researching family history, or simply connecting with others. More information about our history, services and strategies is available on our website.
All Tasmanians are connected, resilient, creative and curious thinkers, enriched by the State's libraries and archives.
About the Role
To coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Libraries Tasmania Adult Literacy Service within a defined geographic area for Libraries Tasmania clients.
What will I be achieving as an Adult Literacy Support Officer?

- Promote, support and deliver elements of Libraries Tasmania’s Adult Literacy Service.
- Recruitment of adult learners to the Literacy service, one-to-one tutoring and small group learning programs.
- Assist in the recruitment and support of a pool of volunteer literacy tutors, including co-ordination of a training and development program.
- Assess the literacy and numeracy learning goals and needs of adults engaging with the Adult Literacy Service, develop learning plans and provide support to the volunteer literacy tutors.
- Assist with supervision and provision of guidance and instruction to volunteers on evidence-informed practices, systems and processes to support learner outcomes.
- Develop and maintain professional knowledge of contemporary adult literacy and numeracy tutoring practices in a library context.
- Provide advice and mentoring to volunteers on evidence-informed literacy, numeracy and learning instruction practices and resolve operational issues in relation to managing volunteers.
- Actively participate as a member of a local and broader regional team, to share your knowledge and ideas and assist in the support, supervision and training of volunteers.
You will work with Adult Learners
- Who want to develop their reading, writing and/or numeracy skills
- Who may have English as an Additional Language (EAL)
- Who are from the Hobart community and Community Corrections
The Adult Literacy Service is the only free service in Tasmania that offers individual literacy and numeracy tutoring and it is an opportunity for people from low socio-economic backgrounds to access help. Some learners have additional challenges relating to experiences of disadvantage or trauma.
The library aims to offer services that welcome and support people from diverse backgrounds – First Nation Australians, people from a wide range of cultures, people living with disability, LGBTIQA+, youth (18+) to mature age learners. At times, our workplaces can be dynamic, and sometimes challenging situations can arise. Training and support are provided to support your operational safety, and help you prepare for, and respond to situations such as these.
