Position Function:
The Facilities Management Department at Mississippi State University is committed to maintaining and improving our campus to create a quality environment for service, research, and learning through effective facilities planning, professional customer service, quality custodial care, and expert repair and construction. The Assistant Director of Custodial Services is responsible for overseeing the implementation and coordination of custodial services to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. This role involves managing personnel, overseeing inventory, and handling budgeting for cleaning, recycling, and support for special events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Oversees and manages custodial operations by assigning tasks and directly supervising custodial supervisors and staff to ensure cleanliness and sanitation across various areas, including building interiors, offices, classrooms, fitness centers, laboratories, furnishings, and equipment, as well as building entrances and exterior walkways.
2. Develop unit work plans and outline general task assignments. Act as a point of contact for special projects and events where custodial services are requested.
3. Assist with preparation of annual custodial budget. Monitor expenditures and employee overtime. Forecast financial trends for both labor and supplies. Develop custodial agreements with campus customers. Work with Facilities Management business operations regarding customer billing.
4. Organizes and coordinates training efforts for employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents, and chemicals. Manages leadership trainings for supervisor and lead employees.
5. Requisition supplies and equipment for custodial use. Approves invoices for payment following established protocols and budget guidelines.
6. Develop and maintain customer relations with university departments and building managers. Regularly visit and respond to building occupant feedback with university departments to coordinate building cleaning standards.
7. Perform custodial space analyses of new, renovated, and existing facilities using generally accepted standards (e.g., APPA custodial staffing standards).
8. Maintain records and submit reports concerning personnel, trainings, equipment, supplies expenses and general housekeeping activities.
9. Interview and recommend applicants for custodial positions. Conduct performance reviews with custodial staff including the establishment of performance standards and ensuring standards are met.
10. Ability to work flexible hours and weekends.
11. Perform related duties as assigned.

Received: Reports to Associate Director of Facilities Management.
Given: Supervises all the work of permanent and contract employees including Custodial Supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of managerial experience.
ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred 7 years of custodial experience in a managerial or supervisory role with knowledge of cleaning procedures, fiscal management, training, and equipment supplies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong management skills in relation to planning and organizing
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills
• Ability to train new employees and supervise staff
• Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.
Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; ; occasional unscheduled and after hours/weekend work due to weather conditions or facility breakdowns: travel or other inconveniences have advance notice; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting more than 50 pounds.
