At No. 41, Mississippi State is one of only three universities in the U.S. ranked in the Top 50—joining the University of Notre Dame (20) and Purdue University (47). In the expanded Top 100 list, the SEC’s University of Tennessee, Knoxville and University of Kentucky are No. 79 and 97, respectively. In 2023 and for the eighth consecutive year, MSU was honored by the national publication, The Chronicle of Higher Education, as a “Great College to Work For.” Based on survey feedback from employees, only 50 four-year institutions achieved this highly respected recognition last year. Also, for the eighth straight year, MSU was named to the Great Colleges Honor Roll for achieving outstanding results in multiple recognition categories.

Collaborative research and service opportunities exist in the department, across the university, and in the local community. For examples of community service by sport administration faculty, see here: https://www.kinesiology.msstate.edu/swimcamp and here: https://svfj.weebly.com/

Undergraduate students can choose one of six concentrations: Clinical Exercise Physiology, Performance Fitness, Sport Administration, Physical Education and Coaching, Physical Activity and Coaching, and Neuromechanics. Master's students can choose from one of four concentrations: Sport Administration, Sport Pedagogy, Disability Studies, and Exercise Physiology. Doctoral students have two concentrations to choose from: Sport Studies and Exercise Science.

The neuormechanics concentration combines the disciplines of "neuroscience" and "biomechanics" and deals with study of human movement accomplished by the interaction of the nervous, muscular and skeletal systems of the human body. Students learn concepts of the neuromechanical basis of kinesiology in the development, learning, control and production of human movement. The undergraduate neuromechanicas curriculum focuses on a comprehensive biomechanical, neuromuscular, motor learning and performance analysis of human movement. The concentration enhances the knowledge and understanding of neural, biomechanical, cognitive and behavioral mechanisms underlying human movement to help improve performance and prevent injuries in a variety of populations ranging from recreational, athletic, occupational, geriatric, and special populations such as Downs' syndrome, autism, and Parkinson's' disease. The curriculum provides students a foundation in the mechanisms underlying human movement to prepare students for careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, medicine/physician assistant, neuromechanics, human factors ergonomics, sport science, disability and rehabilitation science.

The Department of Kinesiology is home to the Neuromechanics Laboratory. This laboratory houses many different neuromechanical research tools such as a Motion Analysis 3D motion capture system, AMTI force plates, BTracks balance system, Noraxon Wireless EMG, virtual reality, and a fall harness system. The Neuromechanics laboratory has an established history of success in research publications and presentations, securement of external funding, undergraduate and graduate student mentoring, and collaboration with different departments and units across campus.
