Position Function:
The Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) is seeking a qualified individual to coordinate, support, and help manage informal training and outreach efforts. This position will work closely with GRI faculty and staff to help coordinate workshops, outreach events, and promote GRI project deliverables and objectives through various forms of print and digital media. This is a part-time benefits eligible position (60% work effort).
Salary Grade: 14

Department Profile:
Established in 2000, the Geosystems Research Institute is a collaborative of academic scientists, engineers, and government and industry stakeholders active in conducting research to advance knowledge and practice in earth and it's systems to improve policy and public awareness. The Geosystems Research Institute's approach to research provides an avenue for Mississippi State University to build strong relationships with local, regional, and national agencies and businesses to do work aimed at solving some of today's most pressing environmental issues. In helping carry out Mississippi State University's mission of service and outreach, the Geosystems Research Institute offers a variety of educational opportunities and services to assist researchers, state and federal entities, and the public in utilizing geospatial technologies and data.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Help coordinate non-credit workshops, outreach events, summer programs, and other informal training and professional development activities.
2. Maintain participant records and provide reports as needed.
3. Promote outreach and training opportunities through various forms of digital media and at in person events (state and regional meetings and conferences).
4. Help identify and support development of new informal training opportunities and programs related to project efforts.
5. Help maintain social media platforms and websites, as well as other forms of digital media (videos, dashboards, story maps, etc).
6. Collaborate with internal and external University offices to coordinate special events and conference activities. This involves securing speakers, reserving meeting spaces, ordering food and materials, event promotion, etc.
7. Work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to relevant project activities as directed.
8. Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Management, Earth Sciences, or STEM related field.
Minimum of one year experience working in higher education and/or professional experience working with non-traditional students, federal research grants, outreach, and workforce development programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Three (3) years related experience in project coordination of informal training and outreach activities. Experience using email campaign software (i.e., MailChimp and Constant Contact), creating, and developing literature and media pieces using Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suites, and experience coordinating online course offerings within Canvas. Direct work experience using geospatial software programs (Esri) and working with federal, state, local, and academic entities related to professional and workforce development offerings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Capable of organizing and maintaining multiple programs and activities for extended periods of time.
• Knowledge of all Microsoft Office Products, and other computer-based programs.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
• No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting (10 – 20 pounds) and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
• Routine deadlines, variance in work volume predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than immediate supervisor.
• Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
• Part-time benefits eligible position at 60% work commitment.
• Overnight travel should be expected.
