Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This a temporary or on-call position. Provides clerical support. Responsibilities may include secretarial, receptionist, bookkeeping, information processing or related clerical tasks. Temps On-Campus: includes College of Human Medicine, the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Detroit Medical Center, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Macomb University CenterTerm. On campus temps can work six (6) months then terminate for three (3) months or switch to an oncall. Off campus temps can continuously work nine(9) month appointment with a one (1) week break in between. On-Call allowed to work up to 40 hours/week for three (3) months then must be moved down to 19 hours/week and cannot work more than 520 hours in any six (6) month period.

Unit Position Summary

Trims fixed tissues regardless of route of submission maintaining proper turnaround times. Make the data entry into PTOE and Transcription.  Decal fixed samples when needed. Fixes tissues in formaic acid or formalin if needed. Stores and disposes wet tissues according to EHS guidelines. Transport and load trimmed tissues onto the tissue processors in the Histo lab.  Takes and annotates pictures of fixed tissues using the Spot Software and digital camera. Maintains a safe and clean work environment. Instructs and trains other staff on how to trim various types of fixed tissues. Helps to identify and solves technical and submission problems. Consults with veterinarians and other clients in order to provide information on selecting the correct test. Works with pathologists, residents, students, researchers and other DCPAH staff to trouble shoot trimming questions, e.g. submission errors, inconsistencies in trimmed versus embedded tissues, proper margin and tissue identification etc.  Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of complex lab equipment and calibrates instruments in order to ensure reliable results. Ensures accurate test ordering and billing. Maintains QA/QC records, identifies variances, resolves QA/QC issues. Maintains proper PPE according to EHS requirements and ensures that personnel working in the triming lab and on the necropsy floor follow proper PPE protocols.  Participates in DCPAH activities, staff meetings and process improvement efforts.  Follows and drafts Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Unloads necropsy animals when needed.  Works on BSL2 and BSL3 necropsy floor when the need arises, e.g. TB surveillance.
