About the Position

This role supports Western Washington University (WWU) by fostering a clean, healthy, and professional environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversees a diverse team of cleaning specialists, window washers, and student custodial aides with professionalism and positivity.
  • Conducts regular spot inspections to ensure cleaning standards are met and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are consistently followed.
  • Provides initial and ongoing training to custodial staff to maintain high-quality service and team performance.
  • Offers constructive feedback to team members to support continuous improvement and operational success.
  • Provides oversight and performs assigned project work as needed.
  • Enforcing workplace safety in alignment with WWU, Facilities Management (FM), and FM Custodial policies and guidelines.

This position plays a vital role in upholding WWU’s commitment to excellence in campus maintenance and safety.

Duty: Custodial and Window Washing Duties

Tasks include:

  • Work assigned buildings with teams to perform cleaning services.
  • As a working supervisor, perform the duties of a Custodian 1 and/or Custodian 3 in assigned campus area.
  • Perform snow removal around the major exterior university residence building entrances immediately adjacent to the exterior doors and any additional areas as assigned by the approved snow plan for Western Washington University.

Duty: Custodial Supervision

Tasks include:

  • Supervise, assign, and inspect the work of area staff who provide daily cleaning and housekeeping duties within assigned areas.
  • Coordinate the delivery of cleaning services in all buildings in the area assigned to the building occupants by implementing a cleaning schedule.
  • Document and address employee performance concerns by providing written and verbal feedback to employees; participate in employee discipline when necessary.
  • Train new employees in proper FM Custodial SOPs and assist the FM Custodial Leadership in conducting team-wide trainings.
  • Monitor and ensure that all safety practices are being adhered to by all team members.
  • Perform operator maintenance on custodial equipment and train team members in proper maintenance of equipment.
  • Perform periodic inspections to ensure that the appropriate cleaning levels are met, and perform additional training as determined to correct areas negatively impacting the cleaning levels.
  • Following FM access and security procedures, oversee the locking & unlocking of buildings, open key boxes and assign radios.
  • Assist and support the implementation and the maintenance of FM Custodial and FM departmental goals in respect to increasing morale, teamwork, and cooperation between teams.

Duty: Operational Support

The Custodian 4 will be assigned to one of the following areas of operational support:

Equipment:

  • Coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance to properly support custodial teams as assigned.
  • Oversee the repair shop assigned personnel in the repairs and maintenance of custodial equipment.
  • Oversee and coordinate the training of repair shop personnel on equipment repair and maintenance of all FM Custodial equipment.
  • Coordinate the moving of equipment to support the FM Custodial projects for the custodial teams

Event/Sustainability Coordination:

  • Coordinate custodial staffing to properly support campus events as assigned.
  • Oversee the signup of FM Custodial and WWU staff for all event assignments in accordance with FM Custodial guidelines.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure that the clean up of special events is completed efficiently.
  • Coordinate the sustainability programs of FM Custodial with the respective teams and buildings in accordance with WWU and FM directives.

Custodial Training:

  • Perform team trainings on the Standard Operating Procedures and FM Custodial Processes.
  • Perform team trainings on Basic and Advance Custodial Operations.
  • Perform team meetings on safety topics appropriate for trade.
  • Perform team meetings on equipment operations and basic maintenance.
  • Perform team meetings on WWU Policies and Procedures that are applicable to FM, FM Custodial, and/or WWU.

Emergency Response/Warehouse:

  • Coordinate custodial responses to any emergency situation requiring a custodial or flood response team member.
  • Oversee the inspection of the impacted area and determine the appropriate response actions to be taken by the responding team.
  • Measure and record the necessary moisture and humidity readings for flood responses to ensure that the most efficient drying process is being used.
  • Oversee the emergency response equipment for proper application and positioning for optimal drying of the impacted space(s).
  • Provide input to the Manager for campus communications on emergency response matters.
  • Coordinate the delivery of products orders for the FM Custodial warehouse to the requesting custodial team.
  • Oversee the inventory and organization of the FM Custodial warehouse.
  • Oversee the weekly inventory of the FM Custodial warehouse and order necessary stock.

Inspections/Operational Training:

  • Oversee the scheduled custodial inspections with all custodial teams and ensure their completion as scheduled.
  • Coordinate issue resolution and perform training based on the completed inspections with all custodial teams.
  • Perform a custodial inspection audit of each assigned facility on an annual basis.
  • Perform training with the custodial teams based on deficiencies determined during annual audits in the facility inspected.
  • Perform evaluations and provide recommendations for improved process or equipment to the custodial leadership team on the inspection and audit results.

Duty: Administrative Supervisory Duties

Tasks include:

  • Maintain employee time and leave records; verify time worked and approve time cards.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and consumable supplies for all buildings and areas assigned by ordering and distributing supplies as necessary to ensure appropriate stocking levels are maintained.
  • Conduct formal performance evaluations.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process of new custodial staff.
  • Perform daily key inventories and report discrepancies.
  • Complete and submit appropriate maintenance requests on any assigned FM Custodial equipment needing repair.
  • Maintain accurate records on equipment and repair history. Conduct periodic equipment inventories as directed.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the housekeeping, janitorial, or custodial work trade.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in the housekeeping, custodial, or janitorial trade or 3 years of supervisory experience in the service industry.
  • Ability to read and understand written information and instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with others.
  • Experience working in sensitive situations such as operational offices, classrooms, dorm rooms, rest rooms, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations.
  • Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to perform daily work tasks independently under limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform recordkeeping and related technical work with accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize technology (computer hardware/software) to track and record work.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a friendly and cooperative manner with students, staff, and faculty at all levels of the organization and in contacts with the public.
  • Ability to manage time well and work under pressure situations with tight schedules and deadlines to complete projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a team cleaning environment in an educational or institutional setting.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience performing hard floor maintenance and restoration including stripping, refinishing, and burnishing floors.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience performing hot water carpet extraction and/or portable carpet cleaning systems.
  • Experience in water damage and restoration.
  • CMI Basic and/or Advance Custodial Certifications.
  • IICRC Certifications.
  • Ability to maintain and use hand and power tools safely as required for the trade (auto scrubbers, floor maintenance, hand-held).
  • Ability to repair hand and power tools safely as required for the trade.
  • A strong knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations, standard job safety rules, proper use of a face respirator.
  • Willing to certify in asbestos abatement.

Salary $3,864 - $4,914/month depending on qualifications and experience
