About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Ranger to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
Rangers provide effective management of natural, historic and Aboriginal heritage by planning, undertaking, coordinating and supervising projects, environmental assessments, visitor and stakeholder liaison, and field-based activities including bushfire management and law enforcement. They will contribute to ensuring Environment and Heritage obligations and aims are met through the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage values of parks.
You will work within a variety of natural environments which may include parts of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, home to Brush-tailed Rock Wallabies, as well as several isolated reserves spread across the New England Tablelands. You may contribute to the management of some important AIS sites, and work amongst environments varying from dry rainforest to sub-alpine environments.
Armidale is an attractive country town on the New England High Country, offering a number of prestigious schooling opportunities for families, local food and live music events throughout the year which is bound to keep you busy outside of work. Being on the doorstep of the vastly wild gorge country of Oxley Wild Rivers NP, if you are interested in recreational bushwalking, fishing, camping, 4wding, cycling and nature-based activities this could be a great opportunity for you.
About You
Your passion for your community and environment, coupled with a strong attention to detail and customer service skills will be key to your success in this role. You will participate in visitor safety management and activities including event management and supporting educational talks for school groups. As a Ranger, you will assist in project managing, interagency initiatives, ecological restoration, threatened species programs, wildlife management, undertaking compliance activities, pest and weed control, to protect and conserve the natural and cultural heritage. You will be responsible for engaging with local landholders to maintain professional and positive working relations for various management duties. You will be expected to work some weekends and public holidays, and you will need to be willing to participate in firefighting duties.
Essential requirements
- A degree or equivalent relevant to the field operations of the Agency.
- Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent and ability to operate four-wheel-drive vehicles.
- Required to obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
- Willingness to fly in light aircraft and preparedness and ability to be involved in incident management duties including firefighting.
This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places. Applicants must meet the requirements of a specific medical assessment which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake the fitness test for firefighting fitness roles (i.e. moderate level Task-Based Assessment for Firefighters) within the 12-month probationary period, if relevant.
The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
