General Summary of Position:

This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position. 

The Assistant Director of Capital Projects will provide leadership and administrative support to the entire capital projects group within Facilities Management’s Planning, Design, and Construction (PD&C) department.

As a member of the PD&C leadership team, the Assistant Director of Capital Projects will assist the Director of Capital Projects to develop, update, and implement standards and procedures to ensure continuity and consistency of project delivery, perform administrative tasks for the capital program, mentor staff and help cultivate collegial and collaborative working relationships between all members of the campus community.

The Assistant Director of Capital Projects will serve as the primary supervisor to assigned project management staff and will provide support and assistance as needed for delivering all projects on time, in budget and aligned with campus strategies and initiatives.  This position may also manage a small portfolio of projects on their own. In general, it is expected that this position may manage multiple technically complex assignments simultaneously.  They will demonstrate their understanding of campus policy, procedure, and expectations by serving as a role model for other employees in all that they do.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s degree in Design, Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or relevant discipline and Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience as project manager in design, architecture, engineering and/or construction industry working with multi-disciplinary client teams or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or relevant discipline and minimum fifteen (15) years of progressive experience as project manager in design, architecture, engineering and/or construction industry working with multi-disciplinary client teams
  • Minimum seven (7) years as the Owners Project Representative on major capital, renovation, and infrastructure projects at a variety of scales in a large institutional setting with direct experience with contracting, scheduling, estimating, and managing multiple design and construction firms.
  • Within one year of appointment, must obtain MCPPO (Massachusetts Certified Public Purchasing Official) designation and maintain a current designation.
  • Within 6 months of appointment, must obtain a Current valid MA Construction Supervisors License and maintain a current license
  • Must possess valid OSHA10 certification.
  • The ability to effectively manage and coordinate the work of consultants, contractors, project managers, and others connected with project development and execution.
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor staff and contribute to the growth of a collaborative team culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to access any portion of a construction/facility site including climbing ladders to assess conditions and perform inspections of existing facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret CADD drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Massachusetts Building Codes, BOCA Codes, and ADA regulations. LEED accreditation and experience with BIM desirable.
  • Ability to prepare accurate cost estimates and budgets with reasonable speed.
  • Ability to work constructively with a wide range of technical, academic, administrative, and professional people.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and graphic communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to simultaneously coordinate multiple projects and relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current construction industry and/or project management related certifications or registrations such as Registered Architect, Professional Engineer, LEED accredited professional, BIM, BOCE, MA CSL
  • Experience with developing procedures, policies, and standards for construction delivery and related project implementation practices.
  • Experience with managing projects subject to Massachusetts public procurement construction laws.
  • Experience managing the procurement, design and construction of laboratory buildings, science facilities, institution/residential buildings, and other institutional facilities. 
  • Experience supervising direct reports, including coaching and mentoring.
