General Summary of Position:

This being a promotional opportunity, only current UML Employees within the same Bargaining unit are eligible to apply for this position.

The Head of Access Services leads and participates in the access services functions of the University Library, which include circulation, course reserves, resource sharing/ILL, collection management, and managing associated technological platforms. The Head of Access works toward offering consistent levels of service in these areas in both library spaces. In addition, the Head of Access Services stays abreast of trends and practices in access and technical services in academic libraries and student employee development and brings this expertise to the Library Leadership Team. 

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • A master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited library/information science program, or international equivalent, by the time of hire; alternatively, we will consider applicants with a master’s degree in a highly relevant field.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience working in an academic library, with at least 3 years of access services experience, including supervisory experience.

Skills:

  • Experience with online integrated library systems, such as OCLC WorldShare or comparable system.
  • Proficiency with Interlibrary Loan platforms, e.g., ILLiad, RAPID, ReprintsDesk, and Article Exchange.
  • Expert knowledge of library principles and policies and extensive knowledge of specialized area functions and workflows.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing; demonstrated success in collaborative environments.
  • Evidence of working effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community; commitment to providing equitable service to a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and independent decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively and flexibility to adapt to and provide leadership in a rapidly changing landscape.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and ensure a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading collaborative projects.
  • Familiarity and facility with Springshare LibApps, including LibGuides, LibWizard, and LibAnswers.
  • Knowledge of copyright best practices as needed for work in interlibrary loan services, course reserves, and digitization requests.
