General Summary of Position:
A research engineer position in medical device development is available at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. This position will involve the design, prototyping, and validation of novel wound healing technology. The project is sponsored by the Defense Health Agency through the US Combat Casualty Care Research Program and in collaboration with investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on productivity and performance, as well as the availability of funding. Candidates with a strong background and hands-on experience in mechanical design, mechatronics, systems automation, and control are highly encouraged to apply.
Essential Job Duties:
- Engineering design, construction, and testing of prototype devices for skin wound healing applications, including building testbeds and collecting performance data.
- Deployment of prototype devices at pre-clinical site, including training personnel and providing engineering support as required.
- Maintaining engineering documentation by creating, organizing, updating, and preserving technical records.
- Support writing and preparation of project reports and dissemination materials, like conference abstracts and posters and manuscripts for publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
Education:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field is required within 30 days of hire.
Experience:
- This is an entry-level position requiring minimum experience in design and prototyping of devices.
Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge and hands on experience in one or more of the following areas is required:
• control systems,
• mechanical design,
• electromechanical system fabrication,
• rapid prototyping,
• miniature sensors development,
• electronic circuit design,
• CAD design,
• programming in LabVIEW,
• LabVIEW Real-Time (software and hardware).
Additional Considerations:
- Ability to work independently, with limited direction, as well as within a team environment. Ability to learn independently as required by the project tasks.

This is a full-time, benefited Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit position in grade P15. Salary range is minimum: $54,217 with 25th quartile of $61,672 and midpoint of $69,126. This position has an anticipated salary based on grant of $62,000/year.
