General Summary of Position:
This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position.
The UMass Lowell (UML) Submillimeter Wave Technology Laboratory (STL) is seeking a Scale Modeling Mechanical Engineer. This position will be involved in, and support, all aspects of STL’s high fidelity scale modeling fabrication efforts within STL’s Model Shop. Key aspects of this position include CAD model creation for model fabrication; target fabrication using subtractive and additive manufacturing techniques such as CNC machining, 3D printing, metal-casting and resin-casting; the production of technical reports; as well as tracking model costs, and labor hours.
Essential Job Duties:
Model Pre-Fabrication:
- Conduct research and gather images, data, and technical information on selected targets as requested by STL’s sponsor.
- Communication with STL’s sponsor to coordinate requirements, provide progress updates, and determine appropriate steps in target development.
Model Computer Aided Design (CAD):
- Create preliminary CAD models using photogrammetry based on collected imagery.
- Design, engineer, and develop full-production SolidWorks CAD models for assigned targets.
- Prepare CAD models for fabrication by identifying appropriate manufacturing processes (e.g. machining, metal casting, micro-stamping, laser cutting, dielectric materials).
- Generate detailed engineering drawings for sourcing components, and communicate with supply vendors, outsourced machine shops, and production shops to support fabrication needs.
Model Creation Documentation:
- Develop and maintain documentation for project costs, model-shop labor hours, target specifications, assembly instructions, and technical reports.
- Generate detailed Bills of Material (BOM) for target fabrication.
- Manage and maintain project data within the Product Data Management (PDM) system, including administrative updates and version control.
- Maintain the target information library and provide requested data and documentation to NGIC/Sponsor in a timely manner.
- Maintain, track, repair, and upgrade objects in the target library and targets database to ensure accuracy, usability, and readiness.
Model Fabrication and Assembly:
- Operate model-shop equipment to machine, 3D print, wax-tree, metal-cast, and resin-cast components for target production.
- Assemble and test produced targets to ensure functionality and quality.
Monitoring of Relevant Emerging Technologies:
- Monitor emerging technologies and evaluate their applicability to target design and fabrication processes.
Other Job Duties:
- Interface with, and support STL’s undergraduate students with operation of model-shop equipment, design workflows, photogrammetry, and SolidWorks best practices.
- Other duties as assigned by STL’s Director or STL’s Model Shop Manager.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience:
- At least 1 year demonstrated full-time experience in the fabrication of scale models in support of radar signature acquisition. Or 2 years of similar experience part-time as a student employee.
- Experience with SolidWorks and the SolidWorks Product Data Management (PDM) system.
- Experience with a variety of subtractive and additive manufacturing technologies including: CNC machining, 3D printing (DLP/FDM/SLS), wax-tree, metal casting, and resin-casting.
- Previous experience working within a DoD cleared facility is required.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail with compliance documentation and deadlines.
- The candidate must be able to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance within 6 months from the date of hire and maintain the clearance while employed at STL.
Additional Considerations:
- Preferred Skills:
- Experience with photogrammetry and related software packages
- Given the nature and responsibilities of the position, only current U.S. Citizens will be considered for this position.
- Internal/External Communications:
- This position requires regular interaction with outside vendors and DoD contracting officers.
- Regular interaction with STL staff is also required, especially STL’s machinists, Prototype Engineer, Model Shop Manager, Senior Mechanical Engineer and Director.
- Patient and effective written and oral communication is necessary
Special Instructions to Applicants:
This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position.
This is a benefited, full-time Grants & Contracts union position in grade P18. Anticipated salary based on range: minimum: $72,170 , 25th quartile: $82,093 and midpoint: $92,017
