Reporting to the Campus Recreation leadership team, the Head Coach for Club Basketball will oversee all aspects of the University’s competitive club basketball program, including planning and conducting practices, game strategy, player development, recruitment, budget management, travel coordination, academic monitoring, compliance, and supervision of team support staff. The Head Coach is responsible for fostering a positive and inclusive team culture, supporting student-athlete well-being and academic success, and implementing disciplinary measures when necessary. The Head Coach will play a vital role in developing content and promotional strategies that elevate the team brand and enhance visibility across campus and beyond. This role includes collaboration with Campus Recreation administrators to plan home events, away contests, and ensure compliance with RMU Club Sports policies and NCBBA league requirements. Candidates must have demonstrated experience in coaching or playing at the high school or collegiate level, as well as a strong understanding of player development, team management, and athlete recruitment. Familiarity with the college athletic recruitment process, including player evaluation and outreach, is essential. This position requires availability for all scheduled practices and competitions, including nights and weekends, and may involve occasional travel to off-campus games. Strong organizational and communication skills, a commitment to student-athlete welfare and academic success, and adherence to University and NCBBA regulations are critical.
Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the growth and development of a successful competitive club basketball program, including the training and development of high-quality student-athletes, as well as demonstrating athletic excellence.
  • Serve as a mentor and leader to student-athletes and team staff, modeling responsible and ethical behavior.
  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive team environment that emphasizes goal setting, cooperation, sportsmanship, and a strong sense of team identity.
  • Leads prospect recruitment efforts, team selection, and game rosters.
  • Works with Campus Recreation leadership staff to organize all home events and manage travel for away contests.
  • Work closely with Campus Recreation administrators in monitoring the program’s operating and recruiting budget.
  • Responsible for developing game plans, scouting opponents, and making tactical decisions during games.
  • Collaborate on player-focused content, marketing of the team brand, and promotion of the RMU Club Sports program.
  • Work closely with the Club Sports office to complete required compliance paperwork.
  • Schedules and conducts weekly team practices and training sessions at the University Fitness & Recreation Center.
  • Manages and leads program support staff, including but not limited to assistant coaches, team managers, media teams, etc.
  • Manages student-athlete eligibility, including academic standards, RMU Club Sports policies, and NCBBA league requirements. Implements disciplinary actions as needed.
  • This position requires availability for all scheduled practices and competitions, including nights and weekends, and may involve occasional travel to support off-campus games.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required; a college degree is preferred
  •  
  • Prior coaching or playing experience at the high school or collegiate level is required
  •  
  • Availability to attend all scheduled practices and competitions, including weekend travel, is required, Familiarity with the recruitment process for college athletes, including player evaluation and outreach, Commitment to student-athlete welfare and academic success
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, Commitment to the NCBBA and university rules
  •  
  • A valid driver's license or reliable transportation to travel on behalf of the university is required
