Lehigh University's Department of Chemistry invites applications for a distinguished Director of Instrumentation position to lead our comprehensive shared instrumentation facility and advance our research enterprise.

The successful candidate will provide strategic oversight and technical leadership for our sophisticated analytical infrastructure, including high-field NMR systems, MALDI, LC-MS, FT-IR, UV-VIS, GC, HPLC, and specialized research instruments. Core responsibilities encompass facility management, preventive maintenance protocols, cryogen management (liquid He and N2), technical consultation, and comprehensive user training programs. The Director will also serve on, or chair, the department's Facilities, Instrumentation, and Safety Committee, and may act as the department's safety officer and Mudd Building Point of Contact.

Position Number: S85380

This position is a Grade: 10 - 40 with an approximate salary range of $66,270-$80,620 and is subject to change based on experience, skills and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Sets instrument usage policies
• Acts as system manager for various computer systems
• Monitors instrument usage
• Trains Students, Post-Doctoral Associates, Faculty, and sometimes outside users on proper instrument usage
• Informs instrument users of policies as needed
• Enforces policies and proper instrument usage as needed
• Helps users interpret data obtained in the facility
• Counsels users on experiment design and implementation
• Suggests alternative analysis techniques
• Helps faculty members with selection of new instruments, including writing of proposals
• Discuss alternative data interpretation with users
• Diagnoses instrument failures
• Repair and/or interface with vendors to facilitate repair of malfunctioning instruments
• Analyzes electronic schematics to help in failure diagnosis
• Orders routine supplies as needed
• Fills cryogens (liquid helium and liquid nitrogen) for superconduction magnets on a routine schedule
• Acts as liaison with vendors for site preparation and installation
• Discuss required environment with facilities services, and monitors progress of any required renovations
• Discusses all aspects of instrument acquisition and installation with interested personnel
• Manages special projects as directed by the Chairperson
• May serve on or chair the Department’s Facilities, Instrumentation, and Safety Committee
• May act as the Department’s Safety Officer and/or serve as the Mudd Building Point of Contact

Qualifications:

• Master's Degree n Chemistry or related field; Doctoral Degree preferred
• Three to five years of related work experience
• Five or more years of related experience in a chemistry instrumentation lab may be a substitute, depending on type of experience
• Knowledge of cryogenic systems and laboratory safety standards
• Proven technical proficiency in instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety protocols
• Strong leadership capabilities with experience in training and mentoring researchers
• Demonstrated expertise in NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry operations
