Job Overview

The Department of Environment and Geography has an opening for an Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) for the Fall 2026, GEOG 110 (Intro to Physical Geography) sections 01. This is a general education area BB (Upper Division Natural Science) course. The expected number of students per class is forty. 

Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants in this classification perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties for the majority of work hours in a given appointment in a given academic department or equivalent administrative unit over the course of an academic term. Assignments are made by academic department or equivalent administrative unit by a specific supervisor at a CSU campus. The work may be performed on-campus or at an off-campus public agency or private non-profit organization under an agreement with a campus in the CSU system.

This position is limited to a maximum of 35 hours or work for the entire duration of the appointment (the Fall 2026 semester). Appointment in this position is contingent upon availability of funds.

PURPOSE OF POSITION 

Grade all assignments, midterm and final exams for GEOG 110 (01), Intro to Physical Geography, Fall 2026 (CRN 41570).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Grade exams and assignments, perform other instructional assistance duties as assigned 100%  

LIST OF DUTIES FOR EACH MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY 

Typical activities of the Instructional Student Assistant include:

  1.  Grade and enter grades for all assignments and exams for GEOG 110 (01), Intro to Physical Geography
  2. Print/copy and use Cougar Courses on the Internet as needed for completing work assignments
  3. Provide feedback to the professor as requested
  4. Perform other instructional assistance duties as assigned.

Instructional Student Assistant will have access to Cougar Courses to grade assignments, midterm and final exams.  Instructional Student Assistant will grade assignments, midterm and final exams in hard copy format when necessary.  Meet with professor virtually or in-person on an as needed basis to receive instructions and coordinate work.

Job duties can be completed remotely.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS 

This position does not require the supervision of others. 

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION 

Requires admission or registration as a CSU student. 

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position  

  1. Ability to understand technical subject matters, including software, and to learn quickly under instruction/supervision by the faculty member.
  2. Ability to learn and perform assigned work on time.
  3. Ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students.
  4. Ability to accept responsibility.

The preferred qualifications for this position include the following: 

  1. A student who is a geography major or minor.
  2. A student who is a computer science or math major or minor, or similar disciplines, including any STEM discipline.
  3. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or any kind of data processing and visualization and/or computer coding, including Excel® skills
  4. A student who has completed or is currently taking GEOG 110, GEOG 120, GEOG 210, GEOG 311, or GEOG 310
  5. A student with background and/or aptitude in Earth sciences, geography, oceanography, meteorology, geology, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, computer science, computer engineering, statistics, economics, finance, and/or related quantitative/scientific areas
  6. A student with general familiarity with geography, GIS, remote sensing, and Earth sciences

List machines, tools, equipment, and motor vehicles used in the performance of the duties 

General office equipment such as computers, telephones, printers, copiers, etc.

Unique working conditions 

Grading of assignments and exams may be completed off-campus or on-campus. Incumbent will be required to meet with supervisor virtually/online or in-person on an as needed basis. Job duties can be performed remotely/virtually. Incumbent will need to have access to a computer/laptop and the Internet.

Anticipated Pay Rate

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: @17.86 CSU Classification Salary Range: $17.86
  • Hours for this appointment will vary 

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.
