The Office of First-Year & University Programs is seeking returning students to serve as a Lead Peer Coach for UNIV Academic Recovery courses. Peer Coaches provide academic and holistic support to students by assisting in the classroom, mentoring peers, and completing outreach to support student success.

Peer Coaches attend weekly class sessions, facilitate small‐group activities, meet individually with students, and collaborate closely with UNIV instructors and program staff. This role offers meaningful leadership experience, professional development training, and the opportunity to make a direct impact on student retention and success.

A Lead Peer Coach serves as a student leader who supports both the peer coaching team and the overall program by providing mentorship, communication support, and guidance. In addition to fulfilling all standard Peer Coach responsibilities, Lead Peer Coaches help ensure consistency, accountability, and a positive team culture while acting as a liaison between peer coaches and faculty.

Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants in this classification perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties for the majority of work hours in a given appointment in a given academic department or equivalent administrative unit over the course of an academic term. Assignments are made by academic department or equivalent administrative unit by a specific supervisor at a CSU campus. The work may be performed on-campus or at an off-campus public agency or private non-profit organization under an agreement with a campus in the CSU system.

Key duties include:

  • Mentoring and supporting assigned peer coaches, particularly new team members
  • Modeling professionalism, strong communication, and effective coaching practices
  • Serving as a point of contact between peer coaches and faculty
  • Sharing updates, expectations, and reminders to support team alignment
  • Assisting with onboarding, trainings, and ongoing professional development
  • Supporting accountability related to outreach, meetings, and engagement expectations
  • Helping identify trends, challenges, and successes to inform program improvement
  • Fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive team environment

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a currently admitted CSU student in good academic standing
  • Must have earned a B or higher in a UNIV Academic Recovery course
  • Must have completed at least two semesters as an ARC Peer Coach
  • Must be enrolled at least part-time
  • Strong communication, professionalism, and reliability required

  • Training provided prior to and during the semester

Required Qualifications

  • Requires admission as CSU student
  • Requires a passing grade of B or better in UNIV academic recovery course
  • Student must be currently on good academic standing with the university
  • Student must be enrolled at least part-time for the Fall 2026 semester
  • Must have completed at least two semesters as an ARC Peer Coach

Compensation & Hours 

  • Starting pay: $17.86/hour 
  • 10-11 hours per week for 2 sections
  • CSUSM student employees are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week between all campus jobs. 

Training 

  • Training provided prior to and during the semester

 

Application Timeline 

This position is open to returning Peer Coaches or qualified continuing students interested in supporting fellow students and developing leadership skills within an instructional setting.

A review of applications will begin on May 14, 2026; however, the position will remain open until filled. All positions are subject to enrollment/registration as a CSUSM student and funding.
