THE UNIVERSITY:  California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) is a comprehensive university serving the San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Public Health (formerly the Department of Health Sciences) is one of the largest and fastest growing departments at Cal State East Bay, with 12 tenure-track/tenured faculty members and approximately 1,000 undergraduate students. The Department will be offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health in Fall 2022 and will be seeking Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation.

The Department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences, which is designed to prepare students to enter into careers in health policy or post-graduate professional or clinical training programs. Undergraduate curriculum in the department emphasizes problem-based learning, teamwork, and strong critical thinking skills, rooted in a population perspective. 

The Department has a strong commitment, embodied in its mission and values, to focus on many of the issues facing contemporary society: health equity, community-engaged public health, ethical research and practice, and a recognition of the importance of social, environmental, and structural determinants of health. The Department is committed to improving the health of our communities and tackling these intersectional problems through teaching, research and service.

It also has a number of adjunct faculty who provide excellent teaching and practical experience to our students. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Candidates should be able to demonstrate ability to teach one or more core courses in the department as well as required and elective courses. The Department employs a curriculum based on problem-based learning; the Department seeks innovative and enthusiastic candidates to help build on this pedagogical foundation. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that tenure-track faculty members will perform their duties within the state of California. 

The successful applicant must articulate a clear research vision appropriate to their discipline, and demonstrate potential to contribute to an active program of research, scholarly, or creative activities, including evidence of productivity that reflects a coherent agenda.

The candidate would also work with Department faculty as it seeks accreditation of the Bachelor of Science degree in public health. 

RANK AND SALARY:  Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience.  Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2023

QUALIFICATIONS: The Department of Public Health seeks candidates who are aligned with its mission and vision. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, ScD, JD, JSD/SJD) in public health, health law, health policy, bioethics, philosophy or other related field

  • Specialized training or work experience in legal and/or ethical dimensions of public health

  • Well-articulated research agenda at the intersection of law and/or ethics and public health with evidence of productivity

  • Demonstrated teaching experience at the University level or promise in this area.  Demonstrated awareness, sensitivity and experience of the needs of historically underserved student populations through training, research, teaching, or advising

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Established research agenda focused on health equity and social justice

  • Ability to teach core courses in bioethics and/or health law

  • Demonstrated track record of or potential for securing extramural research funding

  • Experience in course design, curricular development, blended learning, problem-based learning, and an ability to use technology as a teaching and learning tool

  • Experience working with, mentoring and advising diverse group of undergraduate students

  • Demonstrated service activities that enhance community well-being through participation in local, state or national organizations
