Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $4,269.00 per month to $6,040.00 per month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,269.00 per month to $5,155.00 per month.

About the Position

This is a temporary, full-time, grant funded position through August 31, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment not to exceed three (3) years from date of hire.

EXCEL, a US Department of Education Student Support Services Program, is a federal grant that provides low-income, first-generation college, and disabled undergraduates with supportive academic services, including academic advising, career, goal planning, multi-subject tutoring, scholarship guidance, graduate school advising, personal counseling, and guidance on determining learning style and balancing academic and personal responsibilities. This position provides these services to a caseload of EXCEL students.

Under the supervision of the Director of Affinity Programs and SEAS Engagement Initiatives, the EXCEL Academic Enrichment Counselor will assist with student services work characterized by student advising and guidance in individual and group settings for undergraduate students. This position will help students resolve problems that affect their ability to be successful in their educational and career pursuits and makes appropriate referrals to campus services and other resources. This position will help manage a caseload of students and assist in the transition and retention of students through counseling, advisement, referrals (on and off-campus, as appropriate), and other forms of interventions toward graduation that will lead to success, development, inclusion, retention and enhance student experience on campus.

The position will help foster leadership and career development skills for students and create opportunities that promote student success. The EXCEL Academic Enrichment Counselor will exercise good judgment and learn to exhibit persuasiveness, creativity, professional skills, and knowledge in academic advising, program development, partnership development, and understanding of higher education best practices to improve retention and graduation rates, particularly among the undergraduate student community.

Responsibilities

Counseling and Advising:

  • Assist with advising students in the EXCEL program in groups and individual sessions regarding CSUEB academic policies, and procedures, transcripts, and records.
  • Assist students in the development of an educational plan including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals and monitor each participant's ongoing progress and performance.
  • Assist with providing guidance in course selection in keeping with the student's interests, values, and abilities.
  • Assist in identifying potential at-risk students across all colleges for proactive student advising and intervention; Assist in identifying successful students in EXCEL for appropriate support and recognition.
  • Assist in determining graduation eligibility, assessing academic documents, assisting students in appropriate appeal processes, and advising on requirements.
  • Assist to develop, facilitate, and deliver instruction on topics such as time management, study skills, goal setting, learning styles, career and life planning, and effective communication skills.
  • Collaborate with program faculty and staff to address student and program needs and to develop strategies that support the retention of students.
  • Assist with providing support for students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises, which may impact school performance. Help students access needed counseling services and support networks.
  • Refer students to appropriate on or off-campus services and resources when necessary.
  • Assist students in appropriate appeal processes, provide customer service functions, and advise applicants on program requirements via one-on-one meetings, phone, and e-mail communications. 

DATA Collection and Assessment:

  • Maintain student advising records, keep and produce reports of student advising sessions as needed, and track outcomes of student advising and student success as directed.
  • Collaborate with division units and staff to assess student performance, needs, and satisfaction.
  • Assist with producing regular counselor reports.

Student Recruitment Outreach/Events:

  • Actively participate and represent EXCEL in on-campus and off-campus events that promote the recruitment of new students and support the transition to the University such as orientation sessions and information fairs.
  • Assist in outreach activities at local high schools and community colleges to recruit students while representing EXCEL.
  • Actively participate and represent EXCEL at University and College events during regular office hours and occasionally after hours and on weekends.
  • Provide support for all EXCEL related events.

Campus Involvement and Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Participate in department, division, and campus-wide meetings and committees as needed.
  • Represent the EXCEL program and department at events/meetings as needed.
  • Participate in professional development activities to remain current on relevant issues pertaining to higher education and to support the recruitment, retention, and success of students in the EXCEL program.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to collaboration with campus constituents and provide backup support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Equivalent of one (1) year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • Equivalent amounts of graduate level job-related education may be substituted for the required experience.

Education:

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management.
  • Research and interviewing techniques.
  • Principles of individual and group behavior.
  • The ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned.
  • Knowledge of basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Exhibit an understanding of cultural values and educational barriers for low-income, underrepresented students and the ability to serve a diverse student population.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately, anticipate problems and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in small groups on student-related matters.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly how to interpret and use applicable systems and technology on matters related to admission, registration, advising, and financial aid to effectively advise students.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly the calculation of grade point deficiencies, grade point average, and the impact of academic renewal on a student's GPA.
  • Ability to effectively interact, collaborate and work with a diverse student population, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly university policies, procedures, and deadlines regarding admissions and financial aid.
  • Ability to act and use excellent judgment in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and take initiative in a highly collaborative, diverse, and team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills involving listening, writing, and speaking, which includes public speaking.
  • Exhibit sound foundation in English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail used to execute multiple projects and assignments simultaneously with an emphasis on accuracy and prioritization.
  • Ability to train and provide direction to students and student assistants on new skills and procedures.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be able to demonstrate working knowledge of a process for a program-specific application.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, and interpret data to make sound conclusions and provide appropriate recommendations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio and an ability to understand standard office procedures and operate standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly PeopleSoft applications and other office technology systems.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and exhibit proficiency in typing and keyboard skills.
  • Current, valid California Driver’s License as well as access to personal transportation (travel reimbursed per State schedule).

Special Conditions

  • This position has been identified to have significant responsibility for student and  campus activities and will be required to function as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)  under the Clery Act. In accordance with CSU Executive Order 1107, Implementation of  the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics  Act, the incumbent will be responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act crimes to the  University Police Department and/or the University Clery Director.
    • Responsibilities of the CSA include: 
    • Report all alleged Clery Act Crimes in a timely manner
    • Report any alleged Clery Act Crimes that are reported to the incumbent using the  online CSA Reporting Form
    • Complete annual training requirements

License(s)/Certification(s)

  • A current, valid California Driver’s License is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds to transport equipment and materials for campus events.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings.
