The Building Service Engineer maintains, services, repairs, and inspects heating, ventilating, mechanical, and air conditioning systems, and the mechanical, plumbing, electrical and electronic systems associated with the decentralized utilities centers located throughout the campus and the Central Plant facility.
Responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and inspecting heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, water treatment, and ventilating equipment. Tests, adjusts, and calibrates heating and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electronic and/or pneumatic control instruments and systems. Tests and adjusts, as required, chemically treats boiler hot water, chilled water, condenser, and cooling tower water and other systems as needed. Maintains and inspect, diagnoses, and makes emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, refrigerant, air, and oil distribution systems. Will be called upon to periodically adjust air handling equipment to achieve air flow, temperature and humidity balances for individual rooms, building areas, or buildings. Repairs and replaces bearing, shafts, seals, rings, and electrical wiring, and installs mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes. Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, manuals, diagrams, and operating procedures. Analyzes situations accurately and takes prompt action during emergencies. Assists in University ceremonies, functions, and emergencies.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems for central and decentralized building plants and of building temperature control systems including electric, electronic and pneumatic controls.
- Up-to-date facilities maintenance procedures, including all types of plumping systems, electric motor control systems including electric motor control operations, and water treatment systems.
- Excellent communication skills required to interface with the campus community to complete written work and to interact positively with co-workers and supervisor.
- Trade related higher education desirable, CFC certification.
- Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Education and Experience
Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems required. Four years of experience is preferred. Experience working in a university or institutional setting preferred.
A valid California driver's license is required.
