Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Associate Athletic Director for Health & Wellness, Director of Athletics and Team Physicians, the Associate Athletic Trainer assists in the operation of the Sports Medicine Department within the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. The incumbent is responsible for screening, prevention and care of sports related injuries and conditions.

  • Assists in program development, including coordinating athletic training center operations, coordinates or assigns other athletic trainers and provides direction and training to less experienced athletic trainers, interns or students.
  • Provides direct athletic training coverage of athletic practices and contests, including evening and weekend assignments as assigned.
  • Provides clinical instruction within the Athletic Training Education Program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.
  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field, minimum 4 years of experience (as a certified athletic trainer) in Intercollegiate Athletics, Division I, athletic training experience with both women’s and men’s teams are preferred. Classroom or clinical teaching experience in accredited undergraduate curriculum preferred.
  • Possession and maintaining CPR/AED and Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.

  

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety
  • Ability to demonstrate expertise in making clinical judgements regarding injuries, treatment, and functional progression.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with student-athletes and serve as a liaison among student-athletes, coaches, parents, physicians, and other health professionals. 

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification: Athletic Trainer II / 8185 / grade I
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $5416 - $5513 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4584 - $8884 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.  
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
