Major Duties

Assistant Athletic Trainer will work under the guidance and supervision of the Associate Athletic Director for Health & Wellness, Director of Athletics and Team Physicians.  Assists in the operation of the Sports Medicine Department within the Intercollegiate Athletics Department.  The Assistant Athletic Trainer plays a vital role in ensuring student-athlete well-being by delivering comprehensive care and maintaining accurate medical records.

  • Responsibilities include all aspects of screening, prevention and care of sports related injuries and conditions. 
  • Ability to demonstrate expertise in making clinical judgements regarding injuries, treatment, and functional progression.  Develop and administer rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries.  Provide direct athletic training coverage of athletic practices and contests, including evening and weekend assignments as assigned. 
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with student-athletes and serve as a liaison among student-athletes, coaches, parents, physicians, and other health professionals. 
  • Assist in all aspects of prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for approximately 370 student-athletes. Develop and administer rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries. May attend practices and athletic events and provide emergency medical coverage to student-athletes. Travel with sports teams to away competitions as needed.
  • Maintain updated files and accurate medical records of the following: athletic injuries, medical insurance, medical history, injury referrals, conditioning programs, schedules, and other necessary data.
  • Coordinate clinical and physician appointments between athlete and SHC or outside referral. Inform coaching staff and other healthcare professionals regarding injury status and treatment plans. Daily control of infection and sanitation of the training room by cleaning and disinfecting all equipment, floors, and tables.
  • Maintain an effective inventory control system for all supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in the development and instruction for Kinesiology Athletic Education Program students.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology, or related field of study, or a combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  Coursework must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements. Master's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology, or related field of study, preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer, preferred. 
  • Athletic training experience with both women’s and men’s teams and classroom or clinical teaching experience in an accredited undergraduate curriculum, desired.
  • Classroom or clinical teaching experience in an accredited undergraduate curriculum preferred.
  • CERTIFICATIONS: Current NATABOC Certification; current CPR with AED Certifications.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of athletic training principles, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as emergency medical procedures for student-athletes.
  • Skilled in developing and administering individualized rehabilitation and conditioning programs to support recovery and safe return-to-play.
  • Ability to provide effective medical coverage during practices, competitions, and travel, responding quickly to emergencies and collaborating with coaches, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate, detailed, and organized records of injuries, treatments, referrals, and conditioning programs using electronic and paper-based systems.
  • Ability to safeguard sensitive medical information while ensuring timely updates and accessibility for authorized staff, healthcare providers, and administrators.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
  • Classification: Athletic Trainer I / 8180 / grade I
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $4706 - $4757 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4213 - $8130 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.  
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
