Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Vivarium Support Technician provides comprehensive animal care for various species, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals, ensuring daily husbandry and maintaining breeding colonies. It assists in training faculty, staff, and students in proper animal handling, care, and research procedures. Responsibilities include meticulous record-keeping of animal health, managing supplies and ordering processes, overseeing maintenance of facility equipment, coordinating vivarium space usage, and supervising student assistant schedules. The technician also collaborates closely with institutional committees and departments to ensure adherence to regulatory standards and to maintain smooth operational continuity.

  • Perform daily animal husbandry for diverse species.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care and health.
  • Assist in training staff and students in proper animal handling.
  • Oversee maintenance and order supplies.
  • Manage student assistant scheduling and supervision.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a Biology unit or related discipline acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline;   OR equivalent to an AA degree with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a related discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience;   OR  equivalent to a BA degree with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience. [NOTE:  Number of units and courses must be included on resume if using education substitution.]
  • Master's degree in Biology or 2+ years of lab animal care or zoological institution (or similar) husbandry experience is highly desirable.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification: Instructional Support Technician I / 1615 / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $2103 - $2127 (FTE 0.5) per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $2103 - $3649.50 (FTE 0.5) per month.
  • HOURS: Part Time; 20 hours per week; Monday through Friday. May need to respond to on-site vivarium emergencies at any time.
  • This is a Temporary position; end date to be determined.
  • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
