THE DEPARTMENT:

Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP) aims to make a positive difference in the lives of students through high quality programs and services that promote educational opportunity and support student learning and success. The department oversees various student support programs and service areas that support underserved populations that are primarily first generation, low-income, underrepresented students such as, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Renaissance Scholars (RS), and other similar support service programs.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

Manage a team of professionals in planning, implementing, and evaluating EOP admissions, outreach, enrollment, transition programs, advising, and EOP Learning Center. 

  • Supervise lead staff in each of the unit areas. Work with each unit area team in the enhancement and development of relevant practices and procedures.
  • Assist department leadership with the broader campus community on issues related to educational equity, diversity, inclusion and student retention and success.
  • Assist staff in formulating individual performance goals and/or work plans that enhance and support the department's mission and goals; Empower staff to make independent decisions at appropriate operational levels
  • Complete performance evaluations in a timely manner and recommend appropriate personnel actions.
  • Collaborate with the EOP Admissions and Enrollment Services regarding admissions, financial aid, enrollment services, and evaluate files of EOP applicants for recommend admission decisions as special admits.
  • Make recommendations to leadership regarding enhancement and development of EOP transitional programs and community engagement efforts.
  • Provide support and guidance on EOPLC services, departmental website, and multimedia projects.
  • Collaborate with the EOP Advising team and Academic Affairs Student Success Center regarding advising support services available to incoming and current students to aid in their retention and persistence to graduation.

 

Assist with leadership and management of Student Support and Equity Programs (Program areas include the Educational Opportunity Program’s Admissions and Enrollment, Transition Programs, Advising, and EOP Learning Center). 

  • Assist the department leadership in strategic planning, budgeting, policy formulation and analysis, employee relations, and organizational development.
  • Prepare ad hoc and annual reports, manage special projects, and serve as administrator-in-charge in the department leadership’s absence.
  • Collaborate with appropriate institutional offices to secure and access various reports related to admissions, enrollment, retention, academic performance, persistence, and graduation of students within the programs. 

 

Participate in meetings, committees, and professional development activities. Represent and advocate for Student Support and Equity Programs and its constituents on campus, in the California State University System, and in the community at large. 

  • Meet regularly with department leadership; follow up on action items as appropriate and other projects/duties as assigned.
  • Participate in department team meetings, in-service training sessions, retreats, planning conferences, and other professional development activities.
  • Serve on appropriate committees and in various on and off campus organizations, representing the interests of the department and its constituents.
  • Participate in professional organizations and keep abreast of new developments and issues addressing first generation, low-income students, academic advising, counseling and psychological theories for college students, admissions and financial aid, postsecondary access and equity programs, and student development and retention theory, research, and practice.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree (preferably in student personnel, counseling, psychology, or a related field) 
  • 5 years of related experience and demonstrated effectiveness in overseeing academic support and retention services for low-income, ethnic-minority, and/or first-generation college students. Proven managerial and supervisory skills, strong conceptual and analytical skills, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of critical issues impacting higher education, deep commitment to educational equity and student success, and skill in working effectively with multiple and diverse constituencies to create and sustain positive learning experiences for students. Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills, high level of energy and flexibility, and the ability to handle multiple assignments, manage time effectively, and work independently and as part of a coordinated team. Computer literacy in Windows and Microsoft Office.

 

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 

  • A master's degree
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with experienced staff and unite them around common goals, personal qualities of integrity, flexibility, compassion, and an enduring sense of humor.
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: admissions and outreach, enrollment management, summer transitional programs, academic advising, academic support services, academic skills and learning services, assessment, counseling, community engagement and co-curricular activities.

 

APPOINTMENT AND SALARY

The salary is competitive and includes a comprehensive benefits package.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  This is a Management Personnel Plan Level I position with an attractive benefits package, which includes a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month, an excellent choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance and retirement benefits.
