Anticipated Hiring Range

$2,500.00 - $2,750.00 Per Month ($30,000.00 - $33,000.00 Annually)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

Under general direction of the Director of the School of Theatre & Dance, the Master Electrician manages, maintains, and repairs the Lighting Shop and theatrical electrical equipment. Maintains and repairs electrical aspects of the theatres (Little Theatre, the lab, Studio), as necessary and possible. Assists lab students in the realization and installation of all electrical aspects of theatre and dance productions. Coordinates with Scene Shop Supervisor, Prop Shop Coordinator, and Costume Shop Supervisor.

Position Information

Classroom Support

  • Safety supervision and training of students in lab and crew courses, specifically lighting and sound lab/crew.
  • General support for lab courses may include set and clean up, and/or supervision of students completing those
  • Supervision of students during class periods in which technical work is happening in any performance or
  • Attendance at planning meetings or participation in email correspondence regarding planning for lab/crew

Staff Duties

  • Manage and maintain the Light Shop, lighting inventory, and budget. Including, but not limited to:
    • Repair/troubleshooting of broken lighting fixtures (conventional and intelligent), cable, dimmers, and lighting infrastructure.
    • Repair and maintenance of requisite tools and equipment used in the Light Shop and in theatrical lighting, sound, and projection
    • Troubleshooting and repair determination for other electrical and/or electronic equipment. (i.e., projectors, sound mixers, etc.) (depending on the specific expertise of employee)
    • Maintain/repair dimming and lighting systems in, Little Theatre, McKenna Theatre, the lab, Dance Studio, and classrooms that contain specialized theatrical lighting equipment.
    • Research and advise on equipment purchases for lighting, projection, and sound (depending on the specific expertise of employee)
    • Maintain lamp inventory and organize purchasing as needed

Production Support

  • Attend production meetings
  • Consulting as needed on productions, particularly in terms of scheduling
  • Help fine tune programing of lighting cues as needed by shows

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledges and Abilities:
For Equipment Technician II and Supervising Equipment Technician II, all specialties
Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of equipment in the area of specialization; knowledge of the repair and maintenance of tools and shop equipment, working knowledge of design and drafting procedures.

Ability to perform complex troubleshooting; ability to design, fabricate, modify, and repair technical equipment of the specialty assignment following original or suggested plans; ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed; ability to install, place, and maintain a wide variety of equipment related to the area of job assignment ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position, ability to make arithmetic computations where required.

For Supervising Equipment Technician II, all specialties

The ability to train and supervise others.

For Equipment Technician II and Supervising Equipment Technician II. All specialties.
Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials.

Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in Theatre Arts or equivalent professional training
  • Minimum: One to two years of experience working as a theatrical electrician, ideally in a leadership role or at a medium to large performing entity. Preferred: Three to five years experience working as a theatrical electrician in a leadership role or as a master electrician.
  • Ability to read and interpret scale drawings.
  • Experience in a facility operating within the structure of a typical theatrical production.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety protocols and ability to work safely with theatrically necessary tools and products.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities with faculty and colleagues with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform complex troubleshooting and solve a variety of technical problems.
  • Ability to design, fabricate, modify and repair technical equipment.
  • Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed.
  • Ability to install, place and maintain a wide variety of equipment related to theatrical lighting.
  • Oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical
    students and technical staff alike.
  • Ability and willingness to perform work under strict time constraints.
  • Ability to train and supervise others.
  • Journey-level knowledge of theatrical electrical and dimming systems and ability to troubleshoot and
    repair said systems effectively when possible.
  • Knowledge of an experience working with budget constraints, budget estimates and budget reporting.


Some work may occur on weekends or in the evening. The work schedule shall be adjusted accordingly when such schedule is necessary. Must be able to lift and move items 75lbs.
