Position Summary
Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the pharmacy technician performs a variety of technical and administrative functions in support of pharmacy operations, including the non-discretionary tasks associated with processing and dispensing of prescriptions. Must possess and maintain a license as a registered pharmacy technician through the California Board of Pharmacy.
Position Information
Processing Prescriptions
- Review all incoming prescription drug orders and validity and student eligibility. Enter data
- into the pharmacy automated system and determine billing procedures when applicable.
- Process prescriptions including the dispensing, packaging, and labeling medications. May prepare
- and/or com prescriptions for Pharmacist review.
- Process and input patient's private insurance and/or Medi-Cal information into the system to
- bill prescription insurance company to resolve (if any) rejected claims or issues with processing
- the insurance.
- Train and oversee pharmacy student assistants and pharmacy intern when hired.
- Compile and maintain appropriate medical and medication information and records from patients or
- their me records in conformance with applicable university, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain appropriate prescription records in compliance with university, insurance company, date
- and federal regulations.
Ordering and Inventory
- Perform inventory management duties, including the ordering, cycling of stock and removal of out
- of date items according to established policies.
- Sort and file prescriptions.
- Process prescriptions not picked up for "return to stock".
- Assist in maintaining separate Medi-Cal prescription inventory.
Administrative Work
- Prepare bi-weekly birth control inventory report.
- Prepare and submit End of the Month reports.
- Update Over-the-counter prices, flyers, brochures, and posters.
- Prepare correspondence and other documents.
- Communicate information on policies and procedures to patients.
- Maintain daily refrigerator and freezer temperature logs.
- Maintain pharmacy in a clean and orderly manner.
- Perform cashiering functions, as needed.
- Duties and Responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time, either verbally or in writing as the job necessitates.

Minimum Qualifications
• Must possess and maintain current registration as a Pharmacy Technician through the California Board of Pharmacy. Must possess a high school diploma or have equivalent work experience. Must possess the necessary education and training to be registered Pharmacy Technician, which requires either and Associates Degree in pharmacy technology or completion of an accredited pharmacy
technician training program or equivalent training and experience, as defined and required by the California Board of Pharmacy. Additionally, must possess sufficient experience to gain a working knowledge of pharmacy operations, typically ranging between six months and one year of experience working in a pharmacy setting as a clerk or technician.
• Must possess a working knowledge of brand and generic drug names, prescription packaging and labeling, aseptic compounding techniques and drug disposal protocols
• Must have general knowledge of pharmacy operations, practices and procedures; familiarity with the standards ethics laws and regulations governing pharmacy practice in the state of California.
• Incumbents must be able to understand and use pharmacy and medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols commonly used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
• Computer skills, organizational and task management skills, and ability to communicate well orally and in writing required.
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and exhibit strong customer service skills with patients
• This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist. The pharmacy technician does not supervise.
• This position will have contact with and be sensitive to a very diverse college student population and SHS physicians and staff.
