Anticipated Hiring Range

$5,355.00 – $6,274.00 per month

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs structural and finish components of campus facilities to providean operationally sound and safe facility using a variety of power and hand tools, equipment, and materials. Activities include demolition of walls, floor systems, ceilings; dust protection; repairing/laying floor tile; building walls; hanging sheetrock, doors, door jambs, floors, and ceilings; constructing cabinets, casework, and related projects.
  • Alters and constructs structural components of campus facilities using power and hand tools,equipment, and materials to ensure operational safety and compliance.
  • Reviews and interprets plans, sketches, and instructions to support safe and effective facility construction and maintenance.
  • Keeps records and maintains reports documenting estimates and actual costs for time and materials; analyzes costs using paper, pencil, calculator, or software.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

Work requires thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in both rough
and finished carpentry; various types and grades of lumber; hand and power carpentry tools; and applicable state safety codes and regulations pertaining to the carpentry trade, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes.

Abilities:

Must be able to build, install and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings and cabinetry; operate and maintain hand and power carpentry tools; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; recognize and select appropriate lumber types and grades; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of carpentry projects; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

Experience:

These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible
training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized carpenter’s apprenticeship program.
• Experience working in institutional, residential, or commercial carpentry environments.

Required License/Certification

  • Possess a valid non-restricted California Driver's License; comply with the Defensive Driver’s Training program requirements if a vehicle is used on official business.

  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

Environmental/Physical/Special

May be required to work on weekends, some evening, overtime, call back and/or holidays. Position requires the ability to carry a department provided mobile phone. Uniform will be provided. Expected to wear distinctive clothing and safety shoes provided by the University at all times when in pay status. Work schedule may change depending on the needs of the organization.

This position requires the successful completion of a background check.
