Position Summary
The work is carried out under the overall administrative oversight of the Director of the Student Health Center, with professional or technical guidance from the Pharmacist 11, performing professional pharmaceutical duties in support of pharmacy operations.
Position Information
Dispensing medications
- Prepare, label, and dispense medications in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Review and interpret prescriptions to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness.
- Provide lead work direction and training on established procedures to pharmacy technicians and student assistants in the processing and fulfillment of prescriptions.
- Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, regulations, and campus policies related to medication dispensing.
Administrative Operations
- Participate in the implementation of established pharmacy policies and procedures; provide operational input as requested.
- Provide lead work direction and training to pharmacy technicians and student assistants on routine workflow, including inventory control, purchasing, and recordkeeping.
- Maintain and procure pharmaceuticals and supplies; ensure inventory records are accurate, current, and retrievable.
- Perform routine audits of medication inventory and controlled substances to ensure compliance.
- Maintain pharmacy security in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Prepare pharmacy-related reports, records, and documentation.
- Consult with medical and nursing staff regarding medication-related needs within established protocols.
- Participate in the coordination and implementation of pharmacy systems and processes (e.g., distribution, repackaging), under direction.
Contracts on and off campus
- Drug manufacturers, the FDA, the State Board of Pharmacy for drug information, recalls, and adverse effects, medication, and vaccine vendors.
- All state and national MDs, NPs, RN regarding prescriptions written for patients attending SFSU, CSU Pharmacists.
- SHS staff, including Pharmacy Technicians, UCSF Medical Center (student technicians), SHS management,
including the director.
- Pharmacy system and Pill Dispensing System vendors.
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Licensure: Requires possession of a current and valid Pharmacist License to practice as a registered
pharmacist issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy. A copy of the license must be submitted at the
time of filing or by the time of appointment and upon each renewal.
Education: Graduate of a degree program in Pharmacy from an approved college or university.
The American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) must have approved the degree program, or prior to its establishment, ACPE was a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).
Training and Experience: Requires at least two-year experience as a licensed pharmacist in a hospital or
retail pharmacy, or completion of a pharmacy residency program.
Preferred Qualifications
Provides lead work direction and guidance to pharmacy staff and student assistants on established procedures.
Environmental/Physical/Special
Incumbent must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
