Position Summary:      

Sy Syms Casual Staff (TA, Peer Tutor, or Proctor) supports faculty and students by creating opportunities to review class material and improve student performance (TA). As a peer tutor, the casual staff would meet with students one-on-one to help them with coursework. As a proctor, the casual staff would oversee the taking of exams to ensure academic integrity. 

Position Responsibilities:

TA

• Prepares and leads weekly recitation sessions
• Prepares practice exams, review booklets, and supplemental lecture materials
• Meets with professors to ensure recitations cover topics discussed during primary lecture sessions
• Assists faculty
• Grades student papers
• Provides student support
• Responds to student questions and emails

Peer Tutor

• Tutors students in various courses according to their qualifications
• 5 hours/week minimum availability

Proctor

• Oversees the taking of exams to ensure academic integrity 

TA 

• This position will report to the faculty and/or chair of the department and is supervised by the Academic Administrator.

Peer Tutor 

• This position will report to and be supervised by the Academic Administrator

Proctor 

• This position will report to the professor whose exam is being proctored and is supervised by the Academic Administrator

Experience & Educational Background:

TA 

• An undergraduate degree and a recommendation from the professor requesting assistance. Having taken the course previously is up to the preference of the professor.

Peer Tutor 

• Must have received an A or A- in the course and provide a recommendation by a professor to tutor in the course/s.  

Proctor

• Must have an undergraduate degree

Skills & Competencies:

• Ability to work constructively with students-- individually and in groups
• Basic understanding of pedagogy and ability to instruct
• Ability to create outcome-based review lessons focused on measurable success

Salary Range:

$16.00 - $20.00 per hour
