Department Overview:

The mission of the Advising & Career Center is "to foster SoHE undergraduate students' personal, academic, and professional development to prepare them for graduation and life after college. Through advising, academic planning, and career education we support students as they navigate the college experience - from exploring our majors as prospective students to becoming SoHE alumni."

Our unit houses both academic and career advising and serves as the academic dean's office for the School of Human Ecology.

Schedule:

Interns must be able to work at least 12 hours per week throughout the course of the Fall semester between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Hours are flexible, as the ACC team can work around student schedules as needed. However, interns may also be required to assist with some student programming or events outside of normal business hours throughout the semester. The intern will work in-person, with potential for ad hoc remote work upon discussion with the supervisor.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $16.00/hour Maximum: $17.00/hour

Qualifications:

In order to apply, students must:
- Be currently enrolled in a SoHE undergraduate major
- Taken and successfully passed Inter-HE 202
- Be a self-starter who takes initiative and is highly reliable
- Have high attention to detail to ensure all deliverables are professional and free of errors
- Demonstrate commitment to diversity and building an inclusive community and UW-Madison
- Show enthusiasm for the mission of SoHE and the ACC

This experience is designed to meet the SoHE internship-for-credit requirement. Preference may be given to students who have not yet satisfied the internship requirement for their major.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Fluent with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams, along with Google Suite and Canva
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- High level of professionalism in dealing with staff, students, and visitors
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently
- Strong interpersonal skills and a service mindset to advise/coach peers
- Demonstrated success in completing complex projects, including multi-tasking and juggling multiple priorities
- Understanding of career and professional development related skills, and willingness to learn
- Punctuality, reliable attendance, adaptability, and flexibility, along with diplomacy in providing feedback to peers

Position Summary/Job Duties:

- Curate the bi-weekly newsletter, which includes identifying appropriate internship and career opportunities for students in each SoHE major
- Hold career advising drop in hours to assist students with information such as internship requirements, job search strategies, and other basic career-related information
- Manage the careers@sohe.wisc.edu email and conduct electronic resume and cover letter reviews
- Provide career-related programming and event support and develop marketing and promotional materials
- Co-facilitate info sessions for prospective students to inform about SoHE and career supports
- Identify and execute an individual project targeted at providing additional career related support or resources for student body
- Create content for social media and LinkedIn platforms that engage with the various stakeholders of the ACC
- Collaborate with the ACC staff to collect and analyze SoHE student data about our programs and services; make recommendations for improvements based on that data
- Work on collective programming and projects with other ACC student staff, including the Academic Advising Intern
- Perform other duties as assigned by ACC staff

Physical Demands:

Able to sit for long periods of time at a computer and/or interacting with ACC stakeholders.
Able to lift up to 25 pounds for events and other programming.
