Department Overview:

The L&S STEM Scholars initiative aims to positively impact the recruitment, retention and graduation of underrepresented students majoring in STEM-related disciplines. These disciplines are largely found in our Division of Natural, Physical and Mathematical Sciences and our Division of Computer, Data, and Information Sciences. The initiative is housed within the college’s Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) in the department of Student Academic Affairs. This position will be supervised by an Assistant Dean in CAE and mentored by the course developer.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
• Current graduate student in a STEM field at UW Madison
• Completion of a master’s degree or equivalent graduate coursework
• Experience teaching, mentoring, advising, or coaching undergraduates

Preferred Qualifications
• A graduate student in the College of Letters & Science
• Experience serving students from underrepresented backgrounds and a commitment to fostering an inclusive community
• Strong presentation and facilitation skills
• Experience collaborating to create strategies to support student success preferably in a STEM-related area
• Enthusiasm for creating student-centered, interactive, and engaging activities and events
• Excellent administrative skills, as well as ability to problem-solve, think creatively, and be resourceful

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The STEM Success Coach & Instructor assists with the LASER program, an 8-week paid summer research experience for rising L&S sophomores from backgrounds that are underrepresented in STEM. During fall semester, they will assist with the recruitment and selection of the next cohort of LASER scholars, including presenting information sessions and meeting 1-1 with interested students. The person in this role will also help review and select students to join the summer 2025 cohort.

During spring 2025, the person in this role will be mentored to provide instruction to students in a 1-credit course, Exploring Research, to prepare for their LASER experience. They will also teach a separate 1-credit course during summer 2025 to process that experience. In addition, they will help organize co-curricular programming to foster a learning community and provide holistic coaching to L&S undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds interested in STEM to advance academic excellence, and post-graduate and career development.

Responsibilities:
• Teach a one-credit course INTEGSCI 150 - Exploring Research in STEM during spring 2025
• Teach a one-credit course INTEGSCI 260 - Entering Research during summer 2025
• Meet with students to help them identify and access academic and co-curricular resources to support their pursuit of an undergraduate STEM major, as well as a graduate program or career in STEM
• Assist with coordinating the recruitment and selection processes for students to participate in mentored research
• Other duties as assigned

This position is a combination of HR appointments: a 50% Project Assistant position in fall 2024 semester, a 11.1% Lecturer (Student Assistant) and 38.9% Project Assistant position in spring 2025 semester, and a 20-25% Lecturer (Student Assistant) appointment in summer 2025. Summer appointment details still TBD. Specific appointment dates and compensation rates will be included in the final appointment letters.
