Department Overview:

The Center for Dairy Research (CDR) is known as one of the world’s premier dairy food research centers. Its staff operates a licensed dairy plant on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus to build on Wisconsin's tradition as the "Dairy State." Working with CDR cheesemakers and researchers is a valuable opportunity for students in Food Science, Dairy Science, or related fields. Student workers will gain experience and make contacts that will assist them when applying and interviewing for internships and employment post-graduation.

Qualifications:

No previous experience is required, but Food Science, Dairy Science, or related coursework is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to navigate Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word plus FileMakerPro is also helpful to this position.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Assist with day-to-day operations in the licensed CDR dairy plant in Babcock Hall. This includes cheesemaking assistance, cleaning and sanitizing of cheesemaking equipment, taking cheese off the press and out of the brine, data entry, and other dairy plant related activities.

Perform sampling of dairy products for publicly and privately funded research projects in accordance with approved work instructions upon formal training. Sampling to be used for microbiological, chemical, and/or sensory tests using approved sampling techniques.

Comply with all safety and quality regulations, prioritize work without direct supervision, and maintain confidentiality.

Physical Demands:

Lift up to 50 pounds routinely
