Department Overview:

Housed in the School of Medicine and Public Health’s (SMPH) Office of Strategic Communications, the Wisconsin Medical Journal is a peer-reviewed, indexed journal owned jointly by SMPH and the Medical College of Wisconsin. It publishes original research, case reports, review articles, brief reports and essays about current medical and public health issues.

ASAP

Anticipated End Date (If Applicable):

A multi-semester commitment is desirable. Position is intended to continue through 2024-25 academic year.

Schedule:

Flexible based on student's class schedule, up to 10 hours per week during summer and 4 to 6 hours per week during academic year

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess excellent writing, editing and social media skills, be interested in health sciences and have a desire to learn about academic publishing. A great work ethic and willingness to do both creative and routine tasks are required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required
• Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
• Ability to summarize and communicate about health sciences and public health topics
• Experience with creating clear and engaging social media content, primarily for X (formerly Twitter)
• Experience with or interest in tracking, analyzing and reporting on data derived from digital platforms
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
• Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
• Detail-oriented, well-organized and able to work independently to accomplish tasks as directed
Preferred
• Experience with WordPress, Google Analytics and Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
• Familiarity with Eloqua, MailChimp or similar platforms
• Familiarity with XML
• Experience with communicating about or publicizing research articles

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Assist managing editor with editorial duties as needed, including manuscript management and incorporation of digital object identifier (DOI) system
• Prepare files for digital archives, indexing and continuing education
• Prepare email communications to authors, reviewers and subscribers
• Create and post social media content, primarily for X (Twitter)
• Assist in developing and maintaining a social media editorial calendar
• Update web pages and post new content to journal’s website
• Monitor, track and report on data for digital platforms
