Department Overview:

The University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Program's mission is to support and enhance the sustainable use, conservation and health of Great Lakes resources and the well-being of Great Lakes communities through research, education and outreach. As part of fulfilling this mission, Wisconsin Sea Grant works with fish farmers to improve the success and sustainability of aquaculture throughout the state.

Schedule:

Typical schedule: 9-5, M-F for up to 400 hours. There is some weekday flexibility and opportunities for occasional weekend work.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$15.00 per hour

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will be high school or undergraduate students interested in fish farming, sustainability or water-focused careers.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

An aptitude for identifying and solving problems.
Self-motivated.
A demonstrated record of dependability, time management skills, and attention to detail.
Ability to follow directions and willingness to ask questions.
Preferred experience in animal husbandry or natural resource management.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This opportunity involves supporting research that is looking at more effectively and efficiently raising yellow perch. The work will span two farms near Stoughton, Wisconsin. Duties will include:

• record keeping,
• water quality management,
• feeding fish
• supporting diet studies and other research,
• helping to maintain fish tanks and ponds,
• helping to maintain and build infrastructure.

Additional learning opportunities could include:
• Visits to University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences to tour the aquaculture facilities and participate in research activities with Dr. Dong Fang Deng.
• Visits to other fish farms.
• All-expenses paid invitation to the 2026 Wisconsin Aquaculture Association Conference (March 2026).
• Outreach experience at public events.
• Organizing a fish fry.

Physical Demands:

This opportunity requires physical labor and will be partially out-of-doors.
