Instructor for the STEP Program
(https://precollege.wisc.edu/step )
The instructor’s main role in the program is to be a teacher and a facilitator of learning. Instructors can expect to work with a class size of up to 18 middle school students. Course description listed below:
Do you have a passion in what is right, what is fair, what is just? Do you have a fascination with legal systems? Law 101 is an introduction to the law and the legal system in contemporary American society. In this course, the case study method is used to analyze individual rights as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and as interpreted by the courts. It also examines the two major branches of the law – criminal law and civil law. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of law but even more importantly they will enhance critical thinking, team work and communication skills through group discussions, games, courtroom simulations, and hands-on projects. Field trips and guest speakers will introduce students to real-world experience. As a final summative activity, students act as attorneys and witnesses to face each other in a mock trial on the UW-Madison campus.
*Please note that we will be offering a Law Course for Week One and Week Two of STEP. Each Law course can be taken individually or in combination with each other as these two courses will explore different legal concepts, philosophy, and case studies. Students considering participating in both sessions of STEP could take Law Courses both weeks to have more in-depth exposure and time working on their skills related to law.
