Department Overview:

The Laryngeal Physiology Laboratory is a part of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. We study various aspects of the vocal folds and how they relate to a healthy voice. More information about our lab can be found on our website:

Schedule:

Applicants must commit to at least 10 hours per week during the school year. Typical student hours are blocks between 8:00am and 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. They may work up to full-time during summer and winter breaks.

Qualifications:

• An undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
• While all majors are invited to apply, we will give preference to the following majors: biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, biochemistry, physics, and chemistry.
• We do not have a GPA requirement, however, most of our students achieve a 3.0 or higher and have a competitive resume for future medical school entrance. Please list your GPA on your resume for consideration.
• Desire to work in the lab starting in the summer, with a commitment to multiple semesters in the lab.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

An ideal candidate would have one or more of the following:
• Desire to creatively problem solve and propose new ideas
• Intermediate to advanced programming skills, preferably in MATLAB or LabVIEW.
• Experience with small electronics/circuits.
• Ability to collaborate with others in a team setting and have a desire to lead.
• Strong motivation to complete research projects independently and stay accountable in a self-directed environment
• Experience working with statistics and data analysis
• A strong writing ability
• (Optional) Experience solving differential equations

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Student researchers will work with other lab members on a variety of projects related to the physiology and biomechanics of vocal fold vibration, as well as acoustic analysis. Each team leads a different scope of project, all with the goal of publication in mind. Students may also help with a variety of tasks. A few specific projects of interest include developing MATLAB code for computational modeling, setting up a data acquisition board with pressure transducers for data collection, working with an excised larynx setup, recruiting human subjects, and handling tissue samples.

A major focus of our lab is undergraduate education and training. In our lab, undergraduates are treated as if they are graduate students or post-docs. They will learn how to lead their own projects and be trained to review and think critically about scientific articles. By the time an undergraduate student leaves our lab, they should know the basics of preparing an NIH grant proposal. All of this is to prepare them for whatever career they choose. Work related to NIH proposals require a mix of paperwork assistance, conducting experiments for pilot data, literature searching, running statistical tests, as well as various other tasks. A new hire should expect to work on grant proposals.
