Department Overview:

The Pool Lab investigates how populations respond to natural selection at the genetic level. Research leverages the global diversity of the genetics model organism Drosophila melanogaster, and fuses large-scale fly experiments with the development of novel statistical methods for analyzing evolutionary genomic data.

Schedule:

8 to 12 hours per week during the semester. There is an option to work more hours per week over winter break and/or summer if available. There is considerable schedule flexibility in this work (time of day, and days per week).

Qualifications:

No specific experience necessary, but an interest in evolutionary genetics is preferred. We also prefer students who have exhibited success in their coursework so that we can see you are able to handle additional responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

We will train the student to perform their lab responsibilities, but a successful candidate requires:
-Attention to detail, even when completing repetitive tasks
-Reliability and responsibility in completing assigned tasks with minimal oversight
-Clear communication

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Pool Lab (UW Genetics) is searching for a motivated undergraduate to fill a paid research support position. We use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism to study the how adaptive evolution and reproductive isolation occur at the genetic level. Our short-term need is for help maintaining fly stocks, and possibly helping with various experiments. With time, our students typically start helping with more diverse lab work, and many choose to conduct research projects for credit.

Starting pay is $12/hr. A student interested in staying with our lab beyond the current academic year is preferred, and we are especially interested in students with availability for the summer break (even partial). During semesters, the student can work 8-12 hours per week. There is considerable schedule flexibility in this work (time of day, and days per week). There is an option to work more hours per week over winter break and/or summer if available.

Physical Demands:

May occasionally be required to lift items up to 20 lbs.
