The focus of this position is to work on a project on spinning yarn from short staple wool fibres using a short staple spinning technology. The work will investigate spinning both blends and pure wool fibres The successful candidate should understand spinning, fibre and yarn structure, evaluation and characteristics of fibres, yarn and textile materials, dyeing and fabric manufacturing.

The ARC Research Hub for Future Fibres is a collaboration between the Future Fibres Group and Carbon Fibres and Composites Group which are part of the larger Institute for Frontier Materials. We have a diverse, dynamic and dedicated team who bring their international experience to push the boundaries of current fibre technologies.

As an Associate Research Fellow, you will:

  • Conduct high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact science outputs
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve defined research goals
  • Participate in intra- and inter-disciplinary research collaborations.
  • Co-supervise postgraduate students to timely outcomes with productive high-quality outcomes.             
  • Understand the objectives and outcomes to be delivered by the University’s strategic agenda.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • PhD in materials sciences or a relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience in short staple carding, drawing and spinning as well as textile dyeing and textile characterisation.
  • Emerging research and scholarship through publications, and/or exhibitions as appropriate to the discipline.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues.
