Job Description

The Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design seeks applicants for tenure-track faculty position(s) in environmental building systems, environmental technology, sustainability, high-performance buildings, or building science at the Blacksburg campus. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to both research and to the culture of a design school. The ideal candidate will engage in rigorous inquiry and teach technical competence to students--while also either teaching a design studio or engaging students in design thinking within the environmental building systems lecture course sequence.

The position places the applicant at the Assistant Professor (tenure track) level, or--when appropriate--as a tenured faculty including Associate or Full Professor; or as a Virginia Tech Professor of Practice (Assistant; Associate or Full Professor of Practice) working simultaneously in the profession and the academy.

The architecture programs at Virginia Tech emphasize student-centered experimentation and cross-disciplinary hands-on learning. The ideal candidate will see no inherent conflict between teaching and research, and see no rivalry between building science and design studio instruction.

The School is especially eager to attract diverse faculty with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We are on a quest to build a program that accelerates university education towards practices accessible to everyone, that proactively makes meaningful impacts and contributions to well-being, and that brings beauty and delight to our everyday lives. As a large program, we have a responsibility and opportunity to make a difference in the architecture profession. People of all backgrounds will be welcomed here.

We are looking for people committed to diversifying the profession, willing to contribute their experiences to enrich the campus community life, and who want to work with us to design an architectural education that prepares our students to be active contributors in making the world better.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach the Environmental Building Systems (EBS) course sequence (or a portion of it); that sequence includes thermal comfort, mechanical systems, lighting, acoustics, enclosure, sustainability, indoor air quality, energy use, and all manner of high-performance building design. The ideal candidate should also possess a research agenda and, once here, will find support for that agenda throughout the university. All faculty are expected to participate in the School's life by attending lectures, attending special events, reviewing student work, and attending faculty meetings. In addition, they will contribute to ongoing program dialogues concerning contemporary architectural education and practice. Position will be based only on the Blacksburg campus.
