Job Description

The Lab and Research Specialist II will support development, implementation, management, and oversight of an Alternative Protein program, focusing on bioprocessing, fermentation, and extruder-based approaches under the Future Foods Lab and Cellular Agriculture Initiative at Virginia Tech. As an integral member of a joint Virginia Seafood AREC and Department of Biological Systems Engineering research team, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with team investigators, conduct and oversee research activities, supervise students, and engage with external partners to ensure successful establishment and future expansion of a world-class Alternative Protein program. The primary location for program research activities is the 3,227 square-feet pilot laboratory in Human and Agricultural Biosciences Building I on the main campus of Virginia Tech.

Required Qualifications

An Associates or Bachelor's degree in Food Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, and Bioprocess Engineering or a closely related field or relevant equivalent experience/training is required. Experience in bioprocessing, protein extraction, biomass conversion, and biomaterials development, and strong written and oral communication skills are required.

Must already be able to work legally in the US.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree is preferred. Experience in working with extruders, bioreactors, fermenters, proteins, and on multi-disciplinary research projects; self-motivated, and a team player. Working experience in plant-based proteins, enzymatic hydrolysis, protein modification, and extraction are highly preferred.
