Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track faculty position at the instructor or collegiate assistant professor level, effective August 2023, in areas related to technical communication, professional development of undergraduate students, and engineering pedagogy. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of high-quality teaching, student engagement, and mentoring.

BEAM is an interdisciplinary department with faculty having broad interests spanning engineering, science, mathematics, and medicine. Offering BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering and engineering mechanics, the department currently has 45 faculty members and is home to over 200 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. BEAM’s graduate BME program is ranked #34 by US News & World Report.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in a STEM field. They are required to have experience with instruction or pedagogical research focused on technical communication/writing, previous employment within technical communication/writing or related experience at time of appointment. Duties will include teaching technical communications in an engineering context, collaborating with department faculty to provide communications instruction in biomedical engineering (BME) courses, providing quality feedback to students on communications assignments, contributing to assessment needs, and contributing towards the professional development of undergraduate students such as job application portfolio preparation and interviewing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. in Engineering Education, STEM field, or communications-related field with a focus on technical communication, background or related experience in biomedical engineering or sciences, and teaching experience in a university or college, preferably within technical communication courses. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
