Job Description

A research technician is needed to manage the aquatic entomology lab in the Entomology Department at Virginia Tech led by Sally Entrekin. The lab is located on the main campus in Price Hall. This is a full time (40 hours/week salaried position that includes benefits). The position will include organizing and managing field work to remote areas with occasional overnight trips, data collection and analysis for aquatic entomology projects, and lab materials and equipment ordering and upkeep. Specific duties will include coordinating and leading field crews on days-long trips to sample macroinvertebrates, water quality, sensor downloading and other common aquatic sampling procedures. In the lab, the primary tasks will include grants management, material ordering, coordination with campus labs for water quality analysis, macroinvertebrate identification, data entry and management, and coordination of data sharing across various research teams

Required Qualifications

Experience with data entry and analysis; Knowledge of aquatic ecology; Ability to identify aquatic macroinvertebrates to the genus level; Experience with ecological field work
Ability and comfort driving large, 4-wheel vehicle off road; Experience working under less-than-ideal environmental conditions: e.g., winter and summer sampling that requires long hikes to field sites with heavy packs; Experience with GIS, GPS and Satellite phones; Experience with applicant tracking systems, human resource management systems, financial tracking systems.

Preferred Qualifications

B.S. in biology, entomology or related field or equivalent, applicable experience.
