Title: Graphic Designer and Communications Coordinator

** Open to Bates College graduating seniors only**

Position Purpose:

The Graphic Designer and Communications Coordinator (Coordinator) is an integral member of the Center for
Purposeful Work, communicating the Center’s programs, timelines, policies and services to students, faculty,
staff, alumni and prospective students and their families. The Coordinator designs and leads the marketing
strategies of the Bates Center for Purposeful Work, and executes those efforts on behalf of an 11-person team
that serves equally internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will be a collaborative team
member who is successful in both group and independent work environments.

The work of the Coordinator is three-fold. The Coordinator will:


1. Ensure the Bates Center for Purposeful Work has a dynamic, prolific and readily recognizable brand presence via both print and electronic platforms.
2. Promote signature programs and initiatives to increase awareness of, and attendance at events.
3. Communicate via electronic and professional-grade print media the on-going and rapid evolution of the Bates Center for Purposeful Work.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as project manager on all print and electronic materials produced by the Bates Center for Purposeful Work.
  • Run the Purposeful Work Instagram Account - used to promote PW events, highlight opportunities, and share fun/informative reels.
  • Manage a newsletter that is sent to all students weekly - promotes resources available at the Center for Purposeful Work, and the individual programs and opportunities offered by staff in the Center.
  • Ensure brand consistency across digital and print mediums.
  • Hire, train and direct the work of three to five undergraduate Marketing Interns.
  • Utilize Purposeful Work Peer Advisors, Office Assistants, Digital Marketing Assistants, and Videographers as outreach team.
  • Primarily organize (and or) run the Purposeful Work photo booth for students, utilize student photographers.
  • Create video library/online resources for students on topics such as job shadows, internships,
    interviewing skills, and job searching.
  • Create logos for new Purposeful Work or PW-adjacent programs (i.e. Life After Bates) that fit within and complement the larger brand of Purposeful Work and overarching Bates brand.
  • Provide analysis and reporting on marketing efforts; produces reports based on data and attendance, such as the annual Outcomes document; contributes to annual report of the Center.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Office of Intercultural Education (OIE), Athletics, Academic Affairs/Academic Departments, and Advancement to design target marketing to expand the reach and awareness of the Bates Center for Purposeful Work.
  • Collaborate with the Bates Communications Office to ensure external messaging aligns with College
    priorities. Ensure career and Purposeful Work related stories are captured, catalogued and elevated to Communications and Advancement.
  • Provides administrative support, as needed, for all internal processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Associate’s degree in graphic design, marketing, communications or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience

  • Relevant experience in the planning, promotion and marketing of events, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Project management experience (ability to take a marking project from concept to execution).
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Articulate the value of and make the case for Bates’ Purposeful Work Curricular Infusion.
  • Knowledge of design programs i.e. the Adobe Suite, with a special emphasis on Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.
  • Proficiency in social media strategy, design and production.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Must be flexible, collaborative and have a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplinary boundaries with a diverse group of faculty, students, and staff.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal & listening) skills.
  • Ability to engage in critical thinking and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential data & information.
  • Impeccable organizational and administrative skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
  • Ability to work independently, and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to develop dynamic presentations.
  • Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel, Power Point, Google docs, email and calendaring.)
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional software as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings & other non-traditional schedules.
