Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department of Fire Protection & Paramedicine Sciences in the Eastern Kentucky University, College of Justice, Safety & Military Sciences, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Applicants should hold an earned Master's degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution at the time of appointment. A doctorate degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution is preferred. The position begins January 2025.


This position serves one or more of the following degree programs: Fire Protection Administration, Fire and Explosion Investigations, and Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology (FPSET). These programs are accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), and the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology program is also accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET (https://www.abet.org). Excellence in, and a commitment to, teaching is essential. Practical documented experience in one or more of the following is ideal: forensic investigation of fires and/or explosion incidents; fire protection engineering or directly related fields; and/or chief-level administration of a multifaceted fire/emergency services organization. The successful candidate will teach online and on-campus fire protection related undergraduate courses in a 4/4 annual teaching load, develop and maintain an active scholarly agenda, conduct academic advising, and participate in service to the department, university, and community. In addition, membership and participation in state, regional, national, or international professional organizations is recommended.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Earned master's degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution at the time of appointment. A doctorate degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution is preferred.

Experience: • Practical documented experience in one or more of the following: forensic investigation of fires and/or explosion incidents; fire protection engineering or directly related fields; chief-level administration of a multifaceted fire/emergency services organization.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain a 4/4 teaching load, teaching courses as assigned at the times and in the locations necessary to meet the needs of EKU students.
  • Utilize effective teaching methods, innovative teaching techniques, and teaching modalities, and multiple evaluation and assessment procedures as a means to help meet the needs of EKU students
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach, develop, and implement courses related to one’s curricular area
  • Develop and maintain an active research agenda
  • Keep up to date with one’s field and curricular areas by reading and reviewing current scholarly or creative works and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and faculty development activities
  • Advise students in fulfilling program, departmental, college, and university committee assignments
  • Demonstrate the willingness and ability to work effectively with colleagues to support the mission of EKU, its academic units, and its campus community
