Job Summary:

The Department of Teaching and Learning at Drake University invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor to teach a three-credit, dual-enrolled (undergraduate/graduate) course titled Methods of Secondary Social Studies. This course is scheduled to run from August, 2025 through December, 2025 and will meet one evening per week (3 hours) in a face-to-face format on Drake’s campus in Des Moines, Iowa.

Methods of Secondary Social Studies is designed to provide pre-service teachers with foundational principles, instructional strategies, and practical tools for effective teaching of social studies at the secondary level. The course emphasizes planning, pedagogy, classroom engagement, and culturally responsive teaching.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Master’s degree (or higher) in Education, Social Studies Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.

· At least 3 years of teaching experience social studies at the secondary level (middle or high school).

Preferred Qualifications:

· Experience teaching or mentoring pre-service teachers in higher education settings

· Familiarity with best practices in social studies pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching

· Comfort with instructional technology; experience with online or hybrid teaching is a plus

Job Duties:

  • 95% - Serve as instructor of record for the course · Provide engaging, rigorous instruction aligned with the course objectives and program standards · Design and facilitate weekly in-person class sessions, discussions, and experiential learning activities · Evaluate and provide timely feedback on student work and progress · Maintain communication with students · Submit grades and required documentation in accordance with university policies
  • 5% - Communicate with Drake Teaching and Learning Department faculty liaison
