Department Summary:

The Finance division consists of the finance and accounting administrative functions of the University and includes the offices of Accounting, Treasury and Endowment Management, Budgeting, Student Accounts, Payroll, and the Student Financial Aid Office.  The Treasury and Endowment Management office administers the Drake University endowment, consisting of over $330 million in investments, and is responsible for the treasury management function of the University, including cash management and banking relationships.  The office also works closely with Institutional Advancement to account for contributions to the University.

Job Summary:

The Treasury and Endowment Director serves as a leader in Drake’s treasury and endowment management function. The Director overseas the administration of the Drake University endowment consisting of over $330 million in investments. The Director maintains the primary operational relationship with the external investment advisor and a number of investment custodians/brokers. The Director administers a variety of investment types including mutual funds, private investments, trusts, annuities, real estate, and life insurance.

The Director is responsible for the treasury management function of the University, consisting of cash management and maintaining banking relationships. The Director’s target is to maintain sufficient liquidity, maximize earnings on idle cash, and deter fraudulent activity.

The Director works closely with Institutional Advancement to account for all contributions to the University. The Director ensures gifts are recorded properly and coordinates and consults with University constituents on the use of restricted and endowed funding, ensuring the use of funding aligns with donor intent. The Director is responsible for the recording of donor pledges and all financial reporting related to contributions.

The Director will have the opportunity to significantly influence the successful implementation of Workday’s Financials systems. The Director reports to the University’s CFO and services as one of five members of the Finance leadership team that provides oversight and strategic direction to the Finance staff. The Director leads a staff of two. The Treasury and Endowment Director is expected to support the University Continuous Improvement Plan initiatives and live out the University Core Values.

Minimum Qualifications:

3-5 years of relevant accounting experience, including some in a leadership capacity

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or similar field of study

Exceptional Microsoft Excel and general computer skills

Ability to work collaboratively with others

Strong analytical skills with attention to detail

Strong data management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Ellucian’s Banner, Workday, or similar ERP systems

Experience within higher education or not-for-profit

Experience with accounting for investments and/or contributions within a not-for-profit organization

Job Duties:

  • 30% - Administer Drake University endowment: Ensure investment balances and activity are recorded to the general ledger accurately and timely.. Monitor adherence to Investment Policy Statement, Spending Policy and other applicable endowment policies and assist with policy revisions as needed. Maintain endowment unitization and compute annual endowment distribution. Assist in preparations for Investment Sub-committee meetings and prepare minutes. Manage operational details of Investment Advisor relationship, including monitoring investment changes, incoming and outgoing wires, fee calculations and reporting. With assistance from staff accountant, prepare monthly reconciliations and journal entries as well as all endowment/investment workpapers for Drake’s annual external audit. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Account for gifts to the University: Ensure gifts to the University are recorded properly in the general ledger. With assistance from staff accountant, reconcile between general ledger gift records and Institutional Advancement records. Record pledges receivable and ensure pledge payments are applied properly. Coordinate and consult with University constituents on use of restricted and endowed funding ensuring use aligns with donor intent. Calculate and record net asset releases for temporarily restricted and capital gifts. With assistance from staff accountant, prepare monthly reconciliations and journal entries as well as all contributions receivable and gift workpapers for Drake’s annual external audit - (Essential)
  • 15% - Treasury Management: Monitor cash balances and invest/redeem funds accordingly. Prepare projections for future cash needs and balances. Maintain relationships with banking partners and work with partners to maximize earnings on idle cash and deter fraudulent activity. Act as a signatory for banking transactions. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Supervise Drake Real Estate: Oversee staff and outsourced services for real estate owned by the Drake endowment to maximize net rental income produced - (Essential)
  • 10% - Capital projects funding: Approve funding for capital projects. Release capital project funds as project funds are used and transfer funds as needed. Report on capital project gifts and fund balances. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Compliance, Research and Support: Ensure compliance with all institutional policies, donor gift agreements and trust documents. Oversee the administration of all annuity and charitable trust transactions, including required distributions and trust tax returns. Support the CFO related to reports or presentations on treasury and endowment functions. Respond to internal or external inquiries regarding the endowment, gift functions or cash management. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Supervise staff accountant and Drake Real Estate property manager and perform other duties as assigned. - (Essential)
