Job Duties

Actively participate in the productive, effective and cost-efficient delivery of programs and services which support and enhance field operations to achieve the goals, mission and vision of the Department.

To perform responsible administrative and skilled mechanical work and to provide instruction to an offender workforce while maintaining a working fleet of gasoline and diesel-powered highway vehicles, heavy construction equipment and motorized small engine construction equipment with service and repair. Maintain computer database of repairs and labor cost. Maintain a preventative maintenance schedule on vehicles and construction equipment. Provide a safe and working environment to promote the activities of the Corrections Construction Unit and offender reentry work program. 
The position requires the employee to possess at time of hiring or obtain a Virginia State Vehicle Inspectors License within 6 months of hire. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent, Valid State issued Driver License.  Current VA State Vehicle Inspectors License. Experience in all phases of current modeled automotive maintenance and repairs. Experience in the construction, design, assemble and maintenance of a wide variety of special purpose heavy construction equipment. Experience and high degree of skill in diagnostic trouble shooting of all phases of automotive and heavy construction equipment. Experience with tools and equipment used for the overhaul, repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy construction equipment. Skills and experience in computerized programs for keeping records of repairs, time and parts used for the servicing of construction and automotive equipment. Skills in the operations of all types of repair shop equipment. Skills in operation of computer Microsoft Professional Office software packages in the performance of duties. Ability to schedule workflow and direct work assignments. Ability to make decisions and time manage daily activities with limited direct supervision. Ability to provide training and evaluated work performance of unskilled workers. Ability to work with hands and stand on a regular basis, in and out of doors, in extreme hot and cold weather working conditions. Ability to travel alone, statewide, with possible overnight stay in the performance of duties.

Additional Considerations

Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) Certification. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification. Valid Commercial Driver’s License with minimum ‘A’ endorsement.
